Does anyone grow veggies in containers? I do a lot of Chinese greens, kale, Swiss chard, radishes and small carrots in containers. In the spring, the pots start out full of veggies but as late spring harvest starts leaving vacancies in the pots, it would be nice to fill in with annuals. Any ideas on annuals that would co-exist?

I grow tomatoes, hot peppers, red sweet peppers. They look pretty with the flowers on the patio. The tomatoes reseed themselves. I have flowers on them already.

I do have one tomato plant - 'Reisentraube' - ready to go into a pot but that's about the latest I'd plant tomatoes in order to get some production. Hoping for something more floral until I can plant cool season crops.

Trying leaf lettuce with mediocre results. Lots of info/tips on the web but so far it's first-timers blues. City rabbits, they're ravenous. I've sown seed in the ground and numerous pots, I will eat salad of my own growing. Mustard greens have always turned the bunnies off. I enjoy them enough to sprinkle them in the ground planted leaf lettuce mix, might be a fix to the wabbit situation? Bunny 1 stopped at one hot pepper plant that's rejuvenating itself quite nicely. Mustard greens grow much like leaf lettuce, visual difference and kinda spicy. I enjoy it and it's no lettuce substitute but certainly a fine mixer.

Oh how I enjoy BBQ bunny. Mmm. mmm good. Campbell's has no patent on that. City life changes a gardener's rules so we fight the thieves with pots, planters, and wire. Perhaps stinky greens will protect my lettuce? I'll be trying this come tomorrow.

I have a small sunny space with the rest of the yard being in various densities of shade. My sunny space is crammed with various perennials, shrubs and bulbs that I'm not willing to give up and I interplant with tomatoes, snow peas and kale. I do have one pot of leaf lettuces that got hit with hail earlier this week and is slowly recovering. I also do Chinese/Napa cabbage, bok choy, early radishes, Swiss chard and carrots in pots. As I harvest some of these things, I want to fill in with a few annuals so that I'm not wasting pot space. Then I'll use the pots for more cool season veggies later on in late summer. I put good potting soil and compost in those pots so it's better than my silt-topped clay garden soil. I don't have rabbits here for soime reason - maybe the woods, occasional fox and raccoons scare them off. I sprinkle cayenne pepper around new planted annuals and perennials but that won't help you if you plan on eating your greens. I'd definitely try growing the bitter ones around the bunny-preferred plants. Always a learning experience when trying to keep your food for yourself.

I am growing peppers, tomatoes, peas and pole green beans, I always put some marigolds along in the veggie pots to keep the animals away, seems to work.

You all are making me hungry.
I keep the bunnies at bay by using bird netting over the areas they would like to eat. Works great. No bunny BBQ for me.
I love mustard greens and collards. Just love the strong taste of them fresh or cooked. Hmmmmmm

I don't know if they actually keep animals away, but marigolds definitely co-exist nicely with tomatoes and most other plants!

Wes, do the rabbits get your lettuce even when it's in pots? I grow mine in flower boxes that kind of "straddle" the 2x4 top of my garden fence and it does great, no slugs, no rabbits, no worries
