This is the first week we have really had enough heat to get the coleus growing, so mine aren't very large yet, but I do see some growth. Many of these are cuttings saved over winter inside.

Thanks. Coleus seem to be one of the easiest pot plants for me to grow. Plus I like that they are easy to overwinter. I had enough to give to a few friends too.

I wish they were easy for me to overwinter. I kill most of them every winter. This year I brought in a combo pot that survived and I was surprised. When I take cuttings and try to keep them over the winter I am good until about March then they slowly die.

I take cuttings in early fall. Stick them in 3"pots with good potting soil and let the sit outside until it gets too cold. By that time they have rooted. I keep them in a South facing window and by early spring most are getting leggy, so I take cuttings from the cuttings and start them in ore 3" pots. About a third do die overwinter, probably because I often forget to water enough.

I hold them over winter on the (enclosed, unheated) porch, starting with August/September cuttings in small pots. By February I'm taking cuttings for the coleus I use to edge the Bluestone Walk and by late May they have to leave the house so I can find my sanity. They only get water when they are newly potted. During winter I water very infrequently and they're in very sunny windows. I've lost too many in the past due to too much water. When they begin to droop, I water.

Love that bluestone walk. Don't think I've ever seen that part of your garden Arlene. Coleus work so well there.

Thanks, Allison. Glad to hear your dl's are about to bloom. We have lots of scapes but no big buds but the deer are patiently waiting. They have gotten the buds on my earliest bloomer! I have a few protected but there's no way to protect them all. At least I do have all the rear gardens, around the patio/terrace protected with deer fencing and the miserable deer haven't leaped in...yet. I'll be thrilled to see all the Asiatic lilies bloom! This is just one spot with them.

Yes the deer must do a nightly check and wait for the buds to get big enough to make a nice big tasty meal. I have a couple I have never seen bloom yet. I will move them this year.

I get a double whammy. The rabbits snack when the leaves start to emerge then the deer come by and eat the buds.

I have many, on the outside of the protected garden, that the rabbits get. I think the mother rabbits train the young ones how to eat lily leaves there. I'll have to pot them all up and put them in a safety zone so I can see them bloom. Some I've never seen bloom, Cinta, so I know how you feel.

Oh you feel my pain. It is so hard gardening with critters just waiting to spoil my hard work.
