Yesterday, we went to Lompoc to see the 'world famous' flower fields. At one time, Lompoc produced 50 to 75% of the flower seed in the world. However, vegetables have become more profitable and most farmers have switched. I should have gone 25 years ago. We only saw about 4 flower fields but I did get some pictures. The only flower species we saw were stocks and larkspur. Supposedly Lompoc is famous for sweet peas, but we didn't see any.

Next you can hit the flower fields in Carlsbad.....they do ranunculus....I remember my aunt taking me to the poppy fields up in Antelope Valley when I was quite young...wonder how it is there now with the drought and possibly development....

The poppy fields are still there but this year wasn't a great year because of the drought. I didn't go up there but there was a report on Facebook or somewhere. They have an Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve. It's all natural (no watering), so maybe one on seven or ten years is really good. Not only does the quantity of water have to be right, the timing also has to be right. At the wrong time, whatever that is, and they get too much grass.

Well, it's been about 60 years since I was there, so if it's still there at all, it must be doing okay....
