I'd love to see a forum just for edible fruiting plants. Is there anyway we can make that happen? the edibles and preserving forum tends to focus on cooking and preserving more than the growing of the fruit. maybe even add a vegetable forum and a nut forum while we at it. A lot of people share these common interests in the garden community and I think it will make for some interesting conversations. I'd also like to see fruit & nut grower micro badges in the future if possible. we already have tomatoes and veggie badges but nothing for the fruit and nut growers out there. Thanks and I hope others support this idea.

Other than "chat" threads, of the first 40 threads, I found 4 that are about cooking or preserving.

I think the title of the forum might be a bit confusing. It does sound more like a cooking forum than where you would discuss everything from growing elderberries to potatoes and garlic.

If I was new to the site and I wanted to discuss growing apple trees, looking down through the forum list.... I would put my question in trees and shrubs.

I'm for the idea of renaming the "Edibles and Preserving" forum to "Vegetables" and then adding a "Fruit" forum.

Dave, what would you do with the existing preserving and recipe threads? From past discussions, my understanding is that you want all the forums to be garden related and didn't want a specific forum for recipes / cooking?

If the thread was not just general "cooking" or "recipes" like on other garden websites, but a more specific title ….something like ..."Preparing & Preserving Your Harvest" ? That would keep the forum garden related, but still fill a need for people to ask questions and discuss ways to use their veggies and fruits that they grow. Most people grow veggies to eat them and what better place to ask questions about ways to prepare/preserve them than to other gardeners. The "whats for dinner" threads would stay in the Sandbox, for example, while the current threads that Wes has about buying a canner, and chelle has about pickling veggies - would fit in the new forum that would be made when you split up this current forum. I think a title like that would discourage someone from posting a recipe for BBQ pork for example, but would encourage someone to ask if they had a question on the best way to dehydrate the extra bushel of apples from their tree.

Well, unless they are members of the Farm forum and just harvested a pig…. then BBQ pork might fit…. Whistling

We've had a lot of confusion from people who think we have no forum for veggies so my motive is to make it easier for people to find the place to talk about this. As for existing preserving threads, they would stay in the veggies forum unless they are specifically about fruit in which case they'd go to the fruit forum.

Why not a "fruit and vegetable" forum and a separate "harvest - preserving" forum? One is concerned with growing one, the other for processing.

What if we did something like -

"Growing and harvesting fruits and vegetables"

and then -

"Recipes and other uses for fruits and vegetables"

I'm thinking there could be confusion by some (new gardeners for one) as to what is a fruit or what is a vegetable. Many people grow some of both. Don't we also have a forum for heirlooms which alot of people post tomatoes, melons and such anyway. So combining the fruits and vegetables seems like a good idea Shrug!

edit to note -recipes would include canning, drying, freezing, dehydrating, ect- preserving foods.
Recipes could be for fruits and vegetables combined on one forum, but also note other uses? Like soap, (herb soaps) potpourri, creams, herbal teas, bird treats, dog treats, using plants to color food, ect. Not really a cooking recipe per say. Maybe those things go in the crafts area?

Or we could just keep the forum as is and rename it "Fruit and Vegetables" and let the occasional preserving thread remain in that forum.

Fruit and Vegetables, Trees and Shrubs, Vines, etc. Edibles grow in many forms. Don't even get me started on 'what is a fruit' and 'define a berry'. Rolling on the floor laughing

My two cents:
On the one hand, people want to talk about the growing of the plants; on the other hand, people want to talk about how to preserve the harvest. My opinion is that the 'Edibles and Preservin'g forum is just fine the way it is. Thumbs up It can be all things to all people if they utilize it correctly. Each person has the ability to start a new thread within the existing forum for their own purpose - but no one will miss out as it's all under one roof. It's all 'edibles' all the time; the preserving aspect comes in if one was successful with the growing part of the process.

By creating separate forums for this or that, information may get lost/overlooked/buried that could be useful to all growers of all edibles - whatever the type of plant that the edible is growing on.

Thumbs up

I like the idea of renaming, and then perhaps a general intro sidebar that clarifies the forum is for discussing growing, harvesting and preserving of fruit, vegetables, and nuts along with recipes and/ or techniques for food preservation.

I think splitting into 3 separate forums would be scattered.

Deb I agree. I think leaving it ALL together in one forum, maybe renaming or clarifying it a bit.

I agree

I agree with Deb and Frilly... That's what I was trying to say with my first post.

Once Dave said he was for splitting the thread to veggies and fruit, I wondered about a seperate thread for preparing and preserving.

It is one of the forums I follow, and look at almost every day. I do like having them all in one place. Thumbs up

Dave said there has been confusion about no veggies forum, clarifying the forum name might be a good idea.

Perhaps the word "edibles" does not **click** for everyone.

Not easy to title the forum to include veggies, fruits, nuts, herbs, mushrooms, growing, harvesting, preparing and preserving .... without the title becoming a mile long...

I went ahead and renamed the forum to "Vegetables and Fruit".

Eventually I could see breaking this out into further subcategories like tomatoes and peppers but for now I think this'll work.

Thanks everyone for the great input. I really like the idea of subcategories like Apples, pears, Tomatoes, Peppers, Preparing & Preserving, ect within the Vegetables and Fruit category.

Back in January ATP member @jamyers59 (from Texas) asked if there was a Fig Forum; at the same time asked about creating a Fig Microbadge. I shared a figgy recipe on that thread. Thumbs up

Since more folks are paying attention to vegetables and fruit, maybe we can revisit the thread here:
http://garden.org/thread/view_...

I will pose the question on behalf of our friend in Texas jamyers59...
How about a dedicated thread for Figs in the newly-named Vegetable and Fruit Forum?
We can share info about growing Figs; the many...many varieties available, recipes for preparing and preserving Figs.
