Have any of you tried this variety of Verbascum called 'Southern Charm'? I am curious if any of you in the southern USA have grown them yet. I really like the way they look and want to try to winter sow some this fall. Any feedback would be appreciated!

I have grown it. It is lovely! I did wintersow mine and had great success. But I'm a bit further north than you. I think my mom grows it. @abhege can you chime in here?

I have a love hate relationship with Verbascum. Beautiful flowers. And they rebloom if cut back after first flush. But mine took up a good size footprint. I tried ripping them out. They have some serious thick deep roots. And they would come back. Then I would be happy they came back. Then they would frustrate me and I would take them out again.......

Thanks. These are so beautiful. If I could just grow a few it would be worth the trouble.

Plants with big footprints are fine in bloom, then comes the down time and the spot looks bare. At least one salvia Caradonna will find a new home very soon.

Yes, I still grow Southern Charm. I'm like Jen except that I reserve a couple of spaces for them to grow. It's the bottom leaves that spread out on the ground so far, one time one was about 12", and that's just one leaf! But you can put other things close because the rest of the plant doesn't take up much room. And they will rebloom several times if you deadhead.

Arlene, how bad are they about dropping seeds all around if you fail to deadhead? I remember something about them being a nuisance plant some years ago and have never liked the idea of growing them because of their impressive size. The gray fuzzy leaves always look bleached out. Thumbs down

I have not found any volunteers yet. If you have the room, they are great cottage garden flowers.

I liked them, but they ended up being a fairly short lived plant for me. Maybe 3 years and did not reseed.
