I have two pots of these and have no idea where they came from. These stems are at least 3' tall and the pictures show different stages of flower development. This must be a perennial since it over-wintered out in the landscape and only began growing during spring.

Please identify this (probably common) plant.

Thanks much. It may be the Scarlet Beebalm variety, but it surely is a Monarda. I will plant these two in the landscape, along with the White Butterfly ginger and Sunset canna. They will go well together with the Monarda in front. Hummers and butterflies are attracted to the ginger as well.

Thank You! Josephine. I kind of thought it was but I don't know who gave me the two plants and this is the first flowers I have seen. They are really nice looking flowers. I think next spring I will trim those stems and see if I can encourage branching and perhaps a bit shorter stems as well.

Ken , a dozen or so years ago I ordered Monarda didyma 'Jacob Cline'

I did not have much in the way of luck getting it to grow. The company replaced it twice and eventually just sent a container with a M didyma scarlet beebalm plant.

...on the short side, I planted it, waited for a few years, moved it to give room to something else and expected little. Then 2 years ago, it started growing and spreading, but no blooms.

Last year, it suddenly realized what it was supposed to do and more. It put out lovely red blooms and has spilled across the bed and over the edge and may actually have to be moved/removed.

I grow many hybrid monarda in addition to several species and the native plant. You can easily identify any plant as a monarda by the oregano like scent of the leaves which are opposite each other and the square stems. Deer and other critters leave them alone! However, butterflies and moths (especially the day flying Hummingbird Clear Wings) love the flowers.

Thank you dkp. The fragrance you describe is right-on and though I haven't really noticed butterflies, I have seen a hummingbird working the flowers over every day. The flowers are just about done and I am going to let the seed-heads mature and start seedlings from the seeds if possible.

@Moonhowl
Jean, I just posted a question about this on the perennials forum as I could not figure out why mine were not yet blooming.

Ken, don't you just love the fragrance when you are near them? I get in the general area & can smell that lovely scent from the foliage & if I water them Oh Boy! it gets really strong. Makes me want to lay down & roll in it as if I were a cat. Hilarious! Hilarious!

You know Ken, you can divide them. Also do stem cuttings, root cuttings, take runners & they DO run.
