I just came across a photo of this plant; also here at ATP. Does anyone have cuttings to trade or sell Thank You! ? I was thinking after the summer heat though.

I had this one last year but it didn't survive the winter ... maybe if I'd brought it inside it would have had a better chance. We had a very mild winter, no frosts or freezes but it still didn't survive. Thumbs down

I was just given a new plant, Elfie. I'm going to try to root some cuttings and see how it goes. Seems like it should be easy to start from cuttings. Remind me in the fall and I'll send you some.

Thanks Elaine; for selfish reasons I hope you're successful in growing this plant. I've read so many conflicting ideas -- there doesn't seem to be a lot of information "out there". Thank You!

Elaine, I would love cuttings, too!!! This plant is very expensive and hard to find. Take a look at my list if you want to trade anything for it! There's also a lot I have that isn't on the list here...just let me know if you're looking for anything.

Ok, you got it. I have several cuttings that are hopefully rooting (at least they haven't wilted yet in this brutal heat) so it's looking encouraging.

A neighbor, who dabbles in gardening (not too much because of health issues, but I managed to get her to join my gardening club}, emailed me two days ago. She had found this plant at our local WalMart ! She said it was the only one there -- she was in there reasonably early in the morning. Unbelievable. I think that the truck just accidentally dropped this plant off and the rest were bound for stores much further south. I double checked with this WalMart and also made a trip today to the one in town. Nope -- the people in their garden dept., had never ever seen it. before and I even showed them a picture.
Ah, well --- (sigh); one of these days.

I have seen it for sale by at least one of the vendors at the USF Botanical Gardens' plant festivals. I think Colorfield Farms was selling it, but I won't swear to it. But I remember seeing it there. I think they were calling it butterfly plant and that got my attention since I'm a butterfly gardener. Their Fall Plant Festival is in October.

There's tons of plants at Wal Mart! For $6 !!! Unbelievable. I bought one, and it died in the heat. Sigh....

Apologies -- I posted twice. Perhaps I can go in and just edit it out.

A local nursery I go to a lot just posted a video of this plant on their Facebook page so I'm assuming they have it. They're in Lutz, FL (just north of Tampa) like me!

I rarely see Christia obcordata for sale anywhere and I bet Hollie's Farm & Garden over there by you does have it since they've posted that video on their FB page!

I swear I've seen vendors at the USF Botanical Garden sales selling it, too. You know anything with the word "Swallowtail" is going to catch my attention!

I received one as a gift back in the spring, and although it has grown and prospered, and I've even had to prune it, it has not bloomed. I don't think it's exactly a butterfly plant although the leaves do look a lot like green and red Zebra Longwings.

A bit frustrated because I had hoped to root some of the cuttings when I pruned it back, but so far none have worked.

Thanks Lin, it actually doesn't look that good any more, as that pic was taken the day after it came to me.

It had a bit of a setback whilst adapting to its new home, and now that it is growing again, seems to want to be very sprawling, sort of a lax habit, so I might have to find a better place for it. Maybe a hanging basket? In combination with some Caladiums?

That might be a blinding combination of leaf patterns . . . Blinking

To plant or not to plant.....
Hi! I am brand new to this forum-I came across it looking for info on the swallowtail plant. I got mine at Walmart and they had a bunch of them. I also saw it at Hollie's in Lutz. I would like to try and root some- has anyone had success with this? I am going to try rooting in water and in soil to see if I can make it work.

Welcome! Hi plantnerd! Glad to meet someone else who's been to Hollie's. I love that place. They let me take home caterpillars with my plants. I don't know much about Swallowtail Plant, but this is a great site so I'm sure someone out there will have some advice.
