Confused I admit that it doesn't take much to confuse me as I get older and I'm technically challenged to boot. Please forgive me if I've asked this before (because I may very well have and just forgot) *Blush* but I'm wondering if others have confusion at times when it comes to the terms "Parent Plant Entry" and "Generic Plant Entry"?

I'm wondering why some plants in the database have Parent Plant Entries, some plants have Generic Plant Entries and some have Both, and at some of the parent plant entries there seems to be "General Plant Information" listed about the plant (i.e. common names, sun requirements, etc.):
Hibiscus
Daylilies (Hemerocallis)
Caladiums (Caladium)

While at others, such as the Parent Plant Entry for Adeniums (Adenium) there is no "General Plant Information" and no option to enter information. Confused Am I missing something?

... ok, I'm going to go water some plants now. Green Grin!

I have wondered about this myself. My understanding about parent plants was the it was for plants that were parents of cultivated varieties where a generic genus entry was for any plant of that genus. To me the should not be a parent plant entry for hibiscus but a genus entry parent plants should be at the species level. So for hibiscus the parent plant entries should be for Hibiscus rosa-sinensis and another for Hibiscus moscheutos since these are the species which are the parents of cultivated varieties.

I'm not sure I can answer all of your questions, but a generic plant entry would be an entry for a plant that does not have a custom database of its own. Some parent plants don't have any general information because no one has added any yet. The admins do keep track of the parent plants without general information, and all of them will have general information at some point. The general information can be quite limited, however, because it has to apply to every single species and cultivar of the genus.

Jay, we did once have three separate hibiscus databases, one for H. rosa-sinensis, one for H. moscheutos, and one for all the other species. Photos meant for one often ended up in another, so the reasons to combine them eventually outweighed the reasons to keep them separate.

Thanks zuzu, that makes sense. I got confused when I noticed at the Parent Plant entry for Adeniums (Adenium) that it stated "The information below is applicable to all Adeniums" but I saw that the area was blank, no information at all, only photos ... and no way to enter information and I didn't realize that with the Parent Plant Entries, only database administrators could enter info. I found the Catalogue of Life listed at least a dozen species and also a few subspecies of Adenium: http://www.catalogueoflife.org... and I thought the growing conditions would probably be the same for all in that genus but I do realize that of course that may not be the case so I need one of those "smack myself in the head" emoticons. It probably is best to have the Parent Plant entries filled in by administrators only ... or Whistling y'all would be having to make a lot of corrections due to my erroneous input. I do appreciate all the hard work you administrators you and the other administrators do for us ... keeping us in line ... correcting our mistakes etc. Group hug

If you look more closely at those Catalogue of Life entries, Lin, you'll see that most of the entries are synonyms. There's only one species of Adenium: Adenium obesum. It does have several subspecies, however.
