I want to start a nice bed of asian and oriental lilys. When is the best time to plant the bulbs this summer or wait till fall? I've noticed on different web sights that there is a big swing on prices for the bulbs. Where would be the best place to buy some? Roy

I planted mine in the fall. Last year I purchased some from G.H. Wild. They seem to be doing fine and prices at Wild are very reasonable.

Fall planted or early spring planted bulbs are best. Asiatic lilies are very hardy and survive for many years in your climate. Oriental lilies are beautiful but are fussier, like acidic soil and typical last only a few years in your climate. They are worth growing for fragrance though. If you aren't too concerned about getting the correct bulb or a very large bulb, then most any place will do. Typically businesses that grow lilies or are lily specialists will stand behind what they send you and send out larger bulbs, which means more blossoms per stem the first year and replacement if there is an accidental error in your shipment.

Lilies are wonderful, no matter what type you plant.

Yes, you can plant them in the spring and really early. As soon as you can dig in the soil. Otherwise just plant in the fall.

Asiatic Lilies are really easy and come in so many bright colors. Plus they bloom earlier than the Orientals. So get some of each to extend the flower show.

In our zone Asiatic are safe to plant in the Fall. Orientals are planted in he Spring. I have planted Orientals in the Fall if I find a deal. But the local nursery sell them in the Spring because they are fussy and if you plant them in the Spring they have more time to grow good roots and you have a better long term survival rate.
