Here is a small Snapdragon in a homemade starter pot , I am really only seeing if these work or not ..
Their solid , they last , easy to bag and hang for storage , While they do occasional get bent out of shape , they do not crush or break as easy as most starter pots ,
Don't get me wrong , I have nothing against light easy starter pots that are buy and sell for doing business , But for myself , I like something more solid and lasting , at home anyway .

First is the top of a 2 liter , with the small starter plant (seedling )

The third the assembly , There is a small hole drilled a couple inches above where the top fits the bottom for drainage ,etc you can water from the bottom , but the planting soil will not be covered enough to drowned your plant , years like this outdoors , it matters

You might have the smallest and least expensive self-watering pots known to gardeners.

I save 2-liter bottles from work, but only those with straight sides.

Part of that plan is to have lots of free pots by the time I retire, so I can give away plants without giving away my pots.

Have you ever seen photos of those "walls of flying soda bottles"? They hang wires down from some strong horizontal beam, and use them to support lots and lots of 2-liter bottles / flower pots lying on their sides, with an opening cut from the upper side.

Question RickCorey ? Would that be a square milk carton or water container ?, I have not seen many square 2liter containers , except maybe gumball or candy containers , about acorns .. and of course here and now threading ,

Nice! I find I use my repurposed plastic more readily than my fancy store-bought propagating trays. Produce and salad containers always get consideration until I accumulate too many. And every pot from purchased plants gets saved as well.

Sorry, Jim, I meant straight-up-and-down, not straight-square. No bulges and no "wasp-waist" like Coca-Cola. (I want the root ball to slide straight out, don't want to cut the plastic bottle away from the roots.

Dr.Pepper and at least some Canada Dry bottles come this way.



BTW, here is the "flying wall of soda bottles" image. These bottles have bulges, not straight sides.


I wish some soda company would redesign their bottles, especially smaller sizes, to be better reusable flower pots. Even flimsy soda bottles are sturdier than most trays of insert cells.

I would think that making soda bottles shorter and wider would save plastic. But then they would take up more square inches in supermarket display shelves.

Kobe 20-ounce bottles are made from really sturdy plastic, and would be a great size for a pot except that they have deep, acute horizontal ridges that make it hard to push a root-bound root ball out of the bottle.

Yes the the full size straight bottle do give more room and are easier with larger plant growing ,

I remember the Sohochler watermelon saga, just not how to spell it.

Bakers Creek offered them for sale a year or so after I wrote them asking if they had any left from years before, when they were said to have offered it. I guess they got some more in from someone! I bought 20 seeds even though I know that watere4lons could never ripen in our cool summers.

The Russian seed bank (Vasilov Institute?) never came through.

I have some Schochler Watermelon growing. They are blooming well but I haven't seen any fruit.

No, I don't have enough space to plant something that I know won't come close to ripening.

I was thinking of sending some seeds to the people who volunteered to grow it out, but I think they found the seeds faster than I did.

My luck with Watermelons is intermittent , I have in a long past now grown a Black Diamond to about 25 pds an 18 pound Triple Crown Hybrid ,
I came close with sangria and Orangeglo that I have growing now , year before last and orange melon was growing nice and something ate a hole through it from side to side ,,
A few Moon & Stars have made 12 or 15 pds ,
I might look for those Schochler seeds ,, limited Growing space ,,

Jim, Baker Creek doesn't list them online any more.

Tree mail me next year if you really want to try them. I think they are on the long-season, heat-loving side of watermelons.

Seed Saver Exchange, where I got mine still have them listed. It's to late this year but you could buy them now, while they are still available and save them for next year.
