Nothing so tall here. The Sunflowers that self seed seem to be stockier that the ones I start myself from seed on purpose.

I agree. I have one growing that the birds planted and it's around 4 - 5' tall already.

Is that a particlar strain of sunflower or is it tall because of the growing conditions?

Caroline it's probably a mix of both genetics with soil and growing conditions but chances are he isn't parting with any of his seeds. There are other growers that work towards large flower heads with some over 2 ft across. the record for largest sunflower head belongs to Emily Martin from Canada who grew a whopping 32.25" (81.92 cm) flower head in 83.

I had not heard of the Sunflower contests before.
One always hears about the tomato and pumpkin contests!

The squirrels and birds here ruin my sunflower growing, so I will need to either start them in containers or use covers for the seeds.

The Goldfinches enjoy eating on my sunflower heads here. Of course they are only about 5-6 feet high. Nothing special here but they look pretty and the birds enjoy them.

You both should try Titian Sunflower if you can find the seeds. I think seed savers had them a few years ago and may still carry them. They are monsters in terms of flower head and height and are super fun to grow. I think you'll be surprised just how big of a sunflower you can grow with these seeds.
It's best not to transplant sunflowers if you want huge heads and tall plants. Transplanting stunts the plant, effecting both flower size and height. Covers are used to protect plants from frost in colder climate and the planting holes are heavily amended or seeds are sown directly in finished compost piles . Most contest winners for largest veggies are from northern states. The main reason is you get more hours of daylight in the summer than folks in the southern US and sunlight = photosynthesis= larger plants= larger veggies, flowers, fruit, ect... Believe it or not Alaska holds several world records for largest veggies and leafy greens mostly due to the extended days.
Besides Titian sunflower, Dill's Atlantic Giant pumpkin, and Carolina cross watermelon most prize winning seeds are rarely shared by the growers and good genetics are just as if not more important than daylight hours.

Wowee for sure! Of all the seeds I stared in a jug in Feb. I only have 2 Sunflowers, maybe not as tall as me, I am 5ft2" and
here it is August, no bloom, embarrassed to say I don`t even know what it is looking like now, have not been in my
yard or walked over to check it out. Another thing to check out Thursday when I am off.

One of my sunflowers hit 8 feet and still growing, and the rest from seed packet only got to 5 feet. It's the same kind, mabye it's an unusual one?

Maybe better location or better soil?

I think it's all in the genes. Just as one child can tower over his/her siblings, plants can do the same thing.

I wonder if that guy started this sunflower early indoors in a large pot, kept it semi dark so it gets really tall, staked it so it didnt flop, and by the time he planted it outside it was already abnormally tall and then once established just kept on growing.
