In our local store they have a couple of Jackmanii Clematis sealed in an aerated bag for a very good price.
I do not have the garden area that I need to plant them this year,but I will have early next year.
Can I buy these plants and just leave them in their bag until next year.

No. You could buy them and pot them up and just keep them pruned to a manageable level.

They will do quite nicely in a pot, but you may need to give the pot some winter protection in your area. I'm in a similar zone and even in very large containers, I have lost every clematis planted above ground over our winters. I have overwintered small ones in pots on my back porch successfully, to plant out in the spring.

I've had good luck with clematis survival when they were planted right by the foundation of the house, growing on a trellis.

Aha. That's what I thought you meant. Mine do fine outdoors, planted in the ground. Just not in pots. The OP doesn't have a place in the ground available yet, so for him it's a matter of maintaining them till next Spring. Heh, I know what you mean about the canine contingent, having 2 malamutes and a Great Pyr. All my plantings have to be in areas the pups can't get to; they even dig out the pots!

Brian, my suggestion would be to pot them up, prune them off a bit, and then overwinter the pots in an unheated garage or something similar. Definitely not in those bags they come in, but it shouldn't be too hard to find a suitable spot.

Brian, you may need to give them a bit of water over the course of the winter -- they shouldn't be "wet," but you don't want them to be bone dry, either.
