Best of luck! If you ever have specific questions while raising any of your plants, feel free to ask away as there are many very helpful and knowledgeable folks here who'd be more than happy to share their collective wisdom!

I'd have to agree about the plants you listed needing sun....and lots of it. In fact, nothing you list there is going to grow all that well if it's too shaded. You'll get 'leggy' plants that spend most of their energy elongating their branches looking for more sunlight and fruit set will be light, if at all.

David, you may have already done this (and if so, please free to give us a link to the post), but what sort of planting area do you actually have?? What are your growing temperatures like?

specically it is a raised bed i built over an old compost heap covered with regular soil.
i live in jerusalem hot dry summers with snow every winter reaching 0 or -3 degrees
the location is under pine trees with very little direct sun.
i transplanted a month- old -decorative- pumpkin and it is happy........it yet has not reached the surprise.......alot of organic nutrition.the place is public not far from a underground car park where i had to take my dracena from there because it really suffered.thepublic issue is important because not everybody likes my invading attitude..........composter...... plants
iam thinking of planting shade-loving -spices but hate the fact that people may steel them.....i have an ambivalent feeling towards the lot1.2\1.2 meters 40 centimetrs high surrounded by an old window frame not sitting perfect on the ground to allow drainage

0 or -3 degrees Celsius is you low? I wish that was as cold as we got. Then my figs and pomegranates wouldn't suffer from winter damage. We are more along the lines of -12C or 9F for winter lows. Some shade may be good for such a hot area but the plants will need light for photosynthesis. I definitely wouldn't try things like lettuce and spinach in your area, but artichokes would be a good veggie for your area along with eggplants and peppers. You may want to give them a shot next year.

Welcome David. I am sure we would all be interested in how your different growing environs will affect you plants. I agree that as hot as it gets there a little shade can't hurt. Depends on if they get any direct sun at all.

My son is in Egypt right now and plans to travel about a bit. Not right now though as I guess it is a bit "noisy" in the near vicinity. lol
