I was hoping you could add some pics and info on the ones you feel are very garden hardy.
I have tried to grow Tatoo and others that are finicky. I also lost a few new ones I put in last Fall. We had a terrible winter! I don't have a lot of shade and need some help on choosing good ones.

Thanks

I've had good luck growing Blue Mouse Ears, Squash Casserole, Brother Stefan, Pearl Lake, Sweet Home Chicago...actually it's probably easier to list the ones I've lost!

Stitch In Time, Tattoo (twice), Loyalist, Fire and Ice, White Feather Teeny Weeny Bikini...I'm sure I'll think of several more that I've lost over the years! I also have several of my minis that I'm nursing along. I've moved them to a new bed this year and they seem to be doing better, but time will tell.

Rose, I have had several minis but all that remain are Blue Mouse Ears. I would like to do a fairy garden dish. I am afraid that it would be to dry for them tho.

My all time favorite is Francee. It can take all day sun or shade, never wilts no matter how dry, and always looks so nice. Over the years , we have given away and sold so many pieces and it never falters. It will always be on the top of my list!!!

Just about anything, except maybe 'Blue Ivory' in the 'Halcyon'/'June' family is very garden hardy.

Ann, I was on Breck's looking for some bulbs and saw a hosta called Minke. I don't see it in the database. Do you know anything about it??

Hi,
I searched for it in the My Hostas Database. (myhostas.be) Sometimes they list hostas that you can't find anything about anywhere else. Nothing came up except one called Minker with absolutely ZERO information about it.

I would bet that it's a name that Breck's has applied to some existing hosta (that happens at times) or that it's a non registered hosta, maybe developed by Breck's.

There's also a registered hosta, Mrs. Minky - http://hostaregistrar.org/deta... http://www.myhostas.be/db/host...
and one called Nancy Minks http://hostaregistrar.org/deta... http://www.myhostas.be/db/host...

But some of the new perennial vendors are simply offering up older varieties under new names.

Thanks, I couldn't find anything either Angry

The pic online looks like a nice upright one. Any suggestions of other XX LARGE uprights?

Krossa Regal is a beautiful large upright plant.

I have been growing Hostas for 30 yrs. and have only lost three.

Do you only grow them in pots? I could see some dying in pots depending on weather.

If you plant them to deep in the garden you can lose them too. That was my problem and why I lost some when I started gardening.

In my zone 5a, overwintering in pots is a 50/50 proposition. If I value the plant I sink it into my veggie garden.

I was trying to figure out why she is getting death. Hostas are pretty hardy in our zone. If it is planting, voles, moles. Something that needs to be taken care of so she is not wasting money thinking it is the plant. I have left hostas laying on top of the ground all winter and find them growing the following Spring.

There was mention of lack of shade. Are you watering regularly? Hosta can take a lot of sun, but needs extra water to survive.

I have found out the hard way to NEVER plant under a maple tree. I made my 90 yr old mom a memorial garden from my sister's hosta. They were really struggling so I called Bluegrass Hosta Farm and she said that the feeder roots would choke them out Sad One option would be to take a spade and at least monthly cut a circle around each one. They look better this year!!

My hillside bed is old timber soil, so I know the constant struggle with roots! I've been moving some of the hosta in that bed, and I can't believe the nasty roots that I'm finding! I may try the spade trick and see how it works in that need.

Rose, in places the roots are like clumps of white hair. Shocking that they come to the surface like that.
