... and your Mommy? Guess the parents!

Since I moved to a different house this year I wasn't able to do grow outs of my "specials". I ended up growing out F1's of previous years of open pollination MG's grown together on the same frame.

As flowers open I think it would be fun to try and guess the parents of the obvious crosses (though there are bound to be purebred's).

Here is a list of the MG's I've planted - unless otherwise indicated, they are F1's:

Double Blue Picotee X Mini Bar Rose F2, F3, F4,
Platycodon Blue X Fujishibori F1
Grey Fog
Rose Silk
Rose Silk X Fujishibori F1
Mini Bar Rose,
NOID Blues & Pinks

and

Rose Silk
Hanafubuki
Sunsmile Purple
Platycodoon Blue
Grandpa Ott
Cardinal Climber Yellow

Here are the first batch - I've numbered the pictures so if you're guessing the parentage, refer to the picture number:

After looking back at my records, I'm 99.99% sure that number 1 is the Platycodon X Fujishibori F1.

Thumb of 2015-07-13/Xeramtheum/9c6ec9

Number 2 looks like a Hanafubuki purebred and don't have a clue where number 3 came from - It's more yellow than my camera was able to pick up. It will be interesting to see if future blooms from the same plant come out that yellow.

# 1 looks like Heian No Kaori' to me.

I had one like # 3 last year that was yellowish...it came from Joseph

I just looked up the Heian No Kaori - it does look a bit like it but I'm pretty sure I've never had seeds for that one. The color in #1 is more saturated too - I've tagged the plant and will keep an eye on subsequent blooms. It will be interesting to see if the next one have a definitive patterning to it like the Platy/Fuji F1 in the above picture.

The Platycodon Blue X Fujishibori cross is proving to be interesting the F2's looked very different and had an interesting age morph (don't know what else to call it) - that second picture is of the same flower but about 5 hours old. I'll be definitely growing out some of the F3's next year.

Number 4 is Grey Fog.

Number 5 is definitely a cross. I'm thinking it might be the PlatyFuji F1 X Blue Picotee X Minibar Rose

For number 6 I'm leaning toward Rose Silk X Fujishibori F1. It's a different coloring than the usual Rose Silk X Fujishibori F1 I was getting with previous grow outs of the F1 seeds. The picture below is the coloring that occurred.

It is very purple indeed! I was very disappointed though .. this was a deliberate Rose Silk X Fujishibori cross and I was keeping my fingers crossed for speckles .. so far, everything I have crossed with Fujishibori has not had speckles .. so I'm thinking the speckles are very recessive.

Number 10 was a jaw dropper .. I've sequestered it and hand pollinated. Number 9 looks like Hana but I've never seen Hana put out that pattern before so I'm wondering if it might be a cross.

Yes...number 10 is interesting...looks like it and 7 might share a ruffled look to it...maybe a common parent...
LOVE your avatarpicture... I have it planted and it's maybe 3-4 ft. Along now...building up some strength...when did you start seeing flowers on it...and what was flowering like...a few...a lot...frequently...continually..seldom...
The one i have growing isn't the cousin. I grew without flowers last year.." But I believe it is yours... I tip my hat to you.

Thanks! The Trichosanthes has been blooming sporadically this year - may not be getting enough sun and can't seem to get enough food. They bloom the first year from seeds but more prolifically after a year. They are definitely zone 8 hardy so I leave them, pots and all out during winter.

Seven and 8 remind me of Youjiro, color and patterning wise but the form is different. I've tagged the 9 plant to see if it puts out more odd patterned blooms. Ten is amazing and I'm keeping my fingers crossed the plant is consistent with the blooms.

This is exciting! After seeing number 11 this morning thought it was the same plant as 10 but I was wrong .. same form, similar pattern but different color .. I noticed too in number 12, that it was trying to double so I'm wondering if there might be some DBP X MBR in there! You can see in 13 which is the DBP X MBR the same unusual form of the anthers.

I had to cover my plants from the first hard frost of the year. Some of my Ipomoea purpurea are still blooming.
