Recently visited husband's godmother who gave me cuttings of plumerias and adeniums. She has a very large collection of orchids and asked me if I were interested in them. I told her I didn't have a green thumb for them. (I have two dendrobiums that are easy care.)
These are some of her orchids. Should I try them? I am afraid that I might become an orchid addict. Green Grin!

She says the yellow ones are called, "dancing lady."

Well, you came to the right place if you want to be talked into getting addicted to orchids, Kadie. Hilarious! There are a great bunch of orchid addicts here. We love to help other people share our addiction - and of course we'll help you out when you need advice, too.

Yes, those yellow Oncidiums are known as dancing ladies because they look like dancers with full, twirling skirts on. So pretty, and fairly easy care, too.

Would you be able to grow your orchids outdoors all year 'round in Guam? If the winter temperatures usually stay above about 55deg. F then that would make it easier for you to try more kinds of orchids. If you are growing plumeria, then probably you can grow orchids as well. They generally love the same weather conditions - warm and humid but not too hot, and lots of air movement. Since Guam is an island I'm thinking you may have fairly regular winds there?

Elaine, thanks for the encouragement. Yes, orchids grow quite well here...warm, wet, and humid with cooling tradewinds. And thank you for offering advice. Next time we visit godmother I will take up her offer of orchids. Hilarious!
