Purple-rumped sunbirds are common here and they visit my garden often every day. They would have been born in the neighbourhood for some of their generations now. They had made a nest in my yard on a shrub. I had to remove that and thereafter, methinks there were no suitable for nesting in my yard, but very thankfully there are some open spaces with plants and trees in the neighbourhood in the fast disappearing greenery everywhere [greed for construction and rent!]. Their daily visits is enough testimony that they are happy in the neighbourhood, finding good places to roost, reproduce, find food and live happily. After I found there are ways to feed these [thanks to the web] birds, I kept a simple feeder by twisting copper wire and putting some cotton it. Last year, within a day of making it, it was in use! Tailorbirds used to collect but I had not seen Sunbirds do this, at least it had not been taking when I was there, but yesterday, this happened. I was ready to shoot a few images. This is the female of the bird collecting, yellow necked and the male is dark coloured with a distinct purple neck on the lower side.
It made many visits.

Very cool Dinu! I love seeing and learning about the birds, bees, & butterflies in other parts of the world. Thank you for sharing. You might also put hair in there when someone in the family gets a hair cut. Or if you have a dog or cat & brush them then you could put the hair in the spiral.

Thanks Ann. Thanks for the tip about the hairs. When my wife and 2 ds comb their hair, some come out... so I'll ask them to put them in one place so that I can add them there. They will be long hairs - is it okay? No pets at home.

Long hairs are fine as are short hairs too. Smiling

Thanks for this tip. I think I shared somewhere how our tailorbirds found a strong fibre to stitch their nests. They were found pulling out plastic fibres from the old and sun-beaten window shelter of my room. Crows have found junk iron wires at construction sites. These wire pieces are removed from steel rod bundles or to bind rods for concreting. Crows take them away to make nests, along with twigs!

Just goes to prove birds use tools too.
