It is a little-documented & mysterious genus. Have you found a Portulaca you couldn't ID? I can't find pics of all the species, on here or anywhere. The only ID key I can find for Portulacas is from another continent, mostly species that are not in N Amer:
http://www.bashaar.org.il/file...

The parent plant here has no pics, just tagged once in a multi. Apparently people either ID their Portulacas to species, or not all. How interesting is that?! If anyone has a species that has no pics in the database here, pls share pics!
http://garden.org/plants/brows...

Anyone can look up the species of a genus (that USDA knows to be in a state) at this search, but not all species have pics:
http://plants.usda.gov/checkli...

Any resources folks use to ID, pls share! TYVM!

I agree
I am a lover of purslane first, so I know a little more about it than portulaca . Same family but different blooms and leaves as you know.

Once I had pink purslane and white in two near by pots. The bees had fun pollinating and soon blooms on a single stem had both colors. This was BEFORE DIGITAL CAMERAS. I hope to find the hard copy photo to share. One petal was even split down the middle with pink and white. Amazing!

TY, I know you're contagiously enthusiastic, I love that!

I'm asking about ID'ing the other species of Portulaca besides purslane. (Purslane = Portulaca oleracea, which you probably know, but not sure from your phrasing.) There should be some kind of written key describing the measurements of each part of the anatomy of each species, but may not be something that's been put in digital, internet form, in English. I've been unable to find one.

Before any cameras existed, all plants were ID'd by comparing written descriptions. Here's a good example of a written ID key, for Commelina:

Here's a partial list of the un-pictured Portulaca species, wouldn't it be fun to see them?!:

I can't locate the photos I had. They may have gotten deleted when I got a new computer. A few photos did get lost. I think the one that blooms orange is this one:

http://prescottnatives.com/Spe...

Everything looks right and it made those odd seed capsules. I haven't noticed it this year but I haven't been looking either. There are lots of the other two so if I go looking I might find some and take a new photo. It's never been as ubiquitous as the other two natives.

That's adorable! That must be what the plain, non-cultivar species looks like.

This orange one is also reported to be present in TX, P. suffrutescens, but doesn't have a yellow center:

Orange! I notice that in both descriptions the flower is described as yellow tipped with orange Big Grin . But as per your description I see an orange flower with a yellow center nodding . Mentally on my part they don't conjure up the same image. Sometimes a photo is soooo helpful.

Hurray! Great listing, Tiffany!

Yes, I know some of the botanical names. I just get lazy and call things purslane that are actually Portulaca umbraticola or Portulaca oleracea. Rolling on the floor laughing

I honestly love Purslane so much, I tend to forget talking about portulaca proper. Rolling on the floor laughing

Has anyone yet found an ID key for Portulacas?
