I just entered data details for and noticed the database listing for this plant is incorrect as this plant is not a Ficus but rather Excoecaria cochinchinensis. I used to see this plant for sale here in Florida as "Jungle Fire Plant" and "Fire Storm Plant" so I'm not sure if those are actually true cultivar names or if they are just common names for the same plant but I do know that it is definitely not a Ficus.

Thanks for the heads up Lin. I've merged it with our entry for Chinese Croton (Excoecaria cochinchinensis 'Firestorm')

Evan, will the data proposals in the queue that I submitted be moved to the correct plant or should I re-submit?

Again thanks for the heads up. It looks like the merge was allowed while there was a pending data proposal in the queue. I'll leave the pending proposal for @Dave to determine if this behavior should be changed. I also saved a screenshot.

*Blush* I submitted the data before asking that the plant name be corrected. If you can decline the data proposals that I submitted, I'll go ahead and add them to the correct entry.

Lin, If you want to re-propose the data that's fine. I'd like to leave the current proposal alone. It's a small thing but perhaps a warning could appear when a merge is proposed on a plant(s) with a pending proposal in one of the queues.

Evan, sounds good. I went ahead and submitted the data for Chinese Croton (Excoecaria cochinchinensis 'Firestorm')

How often do merges happen? I ask because the complexity of making it do a check for any proposals is something that would take quite some time to make and if this is an extremely rare circumstance, I'd rather just let them be dealt with manually in the odd times it occurs.

Pretty infrequently on my part Dave. Dealing with them manually is fine, assuming of course that I check next time.

I find that often common names will reflect a similarity to another genus, which can be confusing. For example, pelargoniuns are often referred to as geraniums which makes zero sense to me. They have their own name, they should just stick to it.
I want to live in a world where the chicken can cross the road without its motives being questioned.

I agree that it's confusing, Deb! I felt just a bit betrayed when I found out the "geraniums" I'd grown up with weren't actually geraniums! And Hippeastrums being referred to as Amaryllis just annoys me (I get why - visually they're very similar and they are related genera, but still).

Well, now I am more confused that I was:
https://www.ourhouseplants.com...
https://wimastergardener.org/a...
I would like to know if I am growing Amaryllis or Hipperastrums.
Mine grow outdoors and come back year after year, they do not tend to rot even with lots of watering or being planted in very wet conditions. I have always thought of them as Amaryllis and never thought they might be Hippeastrums,
I would think there must be some difference other than being grown outdoors. I do grow Belladonna Lily or Naked Lady, strange thing is I never thought of them as being Amaryllis. I guess here in my location the name Amaryllis is the only name I have heard associated with the plants I grow.

They are Hippeastrums, Larry.

Only Naked Lady (Amaryllis belladonna) remains in the Amaryllis genus; the few other species have been reclassified to other genera (mostly Hippeastrum). I am not sure where the usage of "Amaryllis" as the common name for Hippeastrum plants originated, but it has well and truly stuck.

Well, OK, but I am not going to try and rename all past photos! Those will remain Amaryllis, but the new ones from now on will be Hippeastrums.
Thanks
