All About Milkweed

By Sharon
July 28, 2011

It took many years but it finally occurred to me that some of our most common plants have a more colorful history than our notably famous people do. The common milkweed is one of them.

I have this growing "wild" in my yard in a certain spot. Didn't know what it was for 5 years. It's tenacious and almost impossible to kill... trust me, I've tried. I'd love to have butterflies but the only thing that it seems to attract is.. well, NOTHING. I've pulled it up, cut it with a shovel, don't water it, nothing! Survives the coldest winters w/no protection (at least -20*F), grows to be about 5' tall, extremely xeric, poor poor poor soil (mostly rock & sand).

Anyone want any seeds? I've got probably.. 15? seed pods that are still green (they won't 'ripen' for about another month or so.. usually in August).

And I've never seen monarchs in my neighborhood, so I know I won't be denying them a place for munchies. Only butterflies we have are the white cabbage butterflies & swallowtails.

Sorry about your weed, Toni.
I think you might be out of Monarch butterfly range, even though you obviously aren't out of milkweed range.

Sharon - I've seen monarchs in Denver.. or maybe one of the mimics. Just not in my particular area which sucks. :(

This is what I usually have in my yard: The thread "When it rains, it pours PART 2 plus pretty!" in Roses forum

Swallowtails are great, they're here too.

Lovely pictures of your blooms, I have the same butterfly bush in my yard, or one almost the same. Lots of little flutterbys gather on it.

Sorry about Osiris. We do get attached, don't we?

Nice! Wish they grew wild out here!
