i read that in order to propogate coleus by seeds you need to take off the the stem when the flowers are starting to bloom and go through some kind of process until you collect the seeds.? why not leave the stem on the plant and wait for seeds if that is what i want?because of the energy that plant puts in to create seeds?

If you read that on the internet could you post a link, please? Is it possible they meant to clip off the stem when the petals have dropped and the seeds have formed but before the stage where the seeds have matured enough that they might fall and get lost?

That info is confused, or just wrong. To get seeds from any plant (except a very few rule-breakers,) flowers still attached to the plant must be pollinated, then the seeds must be allowed to ripen, while still attached to the plant. Coleus seeds may or may not produce offspring that resemble the mama plant.

There are several in flower here. I am going to wait a week, and then bag the flower stocks in organza bags. That way I won't lose the seeds if they just drop off the plant.
I am leaving the flower stocks on the plants.

You can easily root cuttings of coleus too.

The Organza bags we use for seed collecting are sold in stores which sell party supplies.
They normally are used to hold candy for favors at weddings or other events.
They have a draw string type ribbon so you can tie them to the plant stalk.
