Becky and Vic -- What do you think about a Garden Art thread for 'Stacks, Totems and Glass in the Garden'. Thumbs up Would there be enough interest for that?

I started a glass totem, but didn't get very far. Every time I start to gather up all my glass treasures I get side tracked. It isn't hard to do so that is why I don't seem to get a project finished before I want to start another. I did make a glass lady but she never did make it out to the garden. Her time inside is almost over.

My glue/adhesive of choice for these is E-6000. What does everyone else use?

I have never made a totem. Are they totally decorative or is there a function too...like a bird feeder?

Yes, they can be decorative and/or functional ... bird feeder, plant stand, side table, birdbath, gazing ball stand, topped with a small piece of statuary ... ??

Ooo, ooo, Robin ... love the vintage white opalescent glass one on the bottom!!

They don't have to be made from glass objects but one thing I've found is that some glazed plates, dishes, vases and pottery will crack due to the stresses of weather. I don't object to that myself as long as they remain solid and stable. If you are using them to hold water as a birdbath or bird watering station, that can be a concern. I try to keep my pottery stacks under at least a bit of protection like carport, trees, etc. Big Grin

One of my personal faves is this shorter one. Later I found the alabaster egg to go along with the picture on the plate. Smiling

This stack is a pottery plant stand consisting of two old green pottery florist's vases with their bases glued together, a decorative Mexican pottery ash tray glued on top of that and topped with a green vase to hold a plant.

A lot of totems were made and set on patios, my patio is such a mess you would never be able to find one. I will get at them sooner or later, my metal plant stand for styrofoam containers is my project right now. Have some plastic panels we hauled out of a dumpster and they will be perfect for top of stand. Have to cut them down to fit, so my big helper (DH) decides it is time for a nap. If I have to wait on him nothing would get done. Keeping my eyes open for "turtle rocks" too.

Totems are so much fun to make. Mostly the fun starts when you go looking for plates, bowls, vases or whatever. I love thrift stores and consignment stores, they have a great variety to chose from.

The pic on the bottom is a type of milk glass, forget what they call it. It's function will be to put little cakes and candies on for Christmas, the rest of the time it will hold fruit. That is the only one that isn't glued yet because I'm looking for a really pretty opalescent vase to go with it, The plates are antique and that vase with it isn't a vase but an old fashion soda glass that they used when you went to the corner drug store that had a soda fountain in it. Sure miss those nickel cherry cokes we used to get.

The one thing to make sure of, actually a couple of things is to have the heavier plate on the bottom and to make sure you have everything right there withing reach and you know for certain how you want them stacked. So play around first with several different plates and vases or whatever you use and then when you discover the one you like the best then glue it.

Thanks for adding that info, Robin. I always tend to arrange and rearrange many times before I'm happy with it. But I'm like that. Big Grin Blinking

Right now I'm looking for items to make three stacks/totems and will top them with these three things (sprayed with poly sealer for outdoor protection) to make a 'vignette' in the shade garden. The statues were Goodwill finds for $2.50 for both.

Thank you Becky, Tee maybe you can find the white milk glass type Avon Bottles to go with those. That's a cool find. I keep looking everytime for that special something like that, when I go into the stores
