I joined earlier today and have been going through some native to US plants to add photos, info, etc. Some do not have the common name I am familiar with. I cam probably live with it in most cases, but one in particular, I'd like added if at all possible.
Deflexed Bottle-Brush Sedge (Carex retrorsa)

The sedge I purchased has the common name of Deflexed Bottle-brush Sedge.

Is there any way to get this common name included?

Since I am new here, I'll share a little about me. My family and I live out in the country on nine acres surrounded by row crops. Because we started noticing and enjoying wildlife, in particular birds, we stopped having the neighbour take the hay. We're slowly changing this to native prairie, trying to stick with plants historically found in Iowa. We're on the souther edge of what is called the Prairie Pothole Region.

The first summer we didn't mow, we had Sedge Wrens, a male Bobwhite, nesting Western and Eastern Meadowlarks, Bobolinks, etc and so on.

We have one elderly duck that we cannot bear to part with. She's survived so much loss in her life and barely survived a mink attack. We spoil her. We now have 3-week old Rhode Island Reds, that we're trying not to spoil too much, but it's hard. They're cute and with feathers coming in, they still have their peeps. They are one child's project and other child will be trying to raise rabbits. We also have a dog, but I am not much of a pet person.

I do dream of taking care of wild birds with the goal of releasing them. Not sure where to begin with that with permits and stuff. We try to help the local raptor rehab in various ways. That may be as close as I get at this time.

I think I overdid it with planting. In trying to keep the yard natives free of weeds, the veggies got ignored. We dug our hapless green beans out of the weeds yesterday and harvested a whole gallon. Sticking tongue out

And as you can see, I can be wordy. Thank you for any help about the common names.

Hi Chillybean, Welcome!

To add a common name, find the plant in the database ... for instance Deflexed Bottle-Brush Sedge (Carex retrorsa) Green Grin!

Scroll down to where it says: Editing Actions
Click on: Edit Plant Name
Next to where it says Common Name you will see a tiny green + sign. Click there and type a common name into the empty box then scroll to the bottom and click on the green area that says Submit Your Proposed Changes.

Thank you for your reply and clear instructions. That was easy. I had seen Edit Plant Name, but I was thinking it only referred to the scientific names. I know some plants have a lot of common names, so I do not want to get carried away adding too many.

Thumbs up You are very welcome. I forgot to tell you that it won't appear right away, any changes we make go into a queue for one of the database moderators to approve.. Once a moderator checks it you will receive a system message letting you know it has been approved.

By the way, love your cute username ... and what a great photo of that little baby bird in your avatar. If you like birds, visit some of us over on the Backyard Birds thread where members post photos of birds in our area. The thread is at the Forum: Gardening for Birds, Bees etc. http://garden.org/forums/view/...
