It is expected every few summers, but it hit this area today. Many plants trashed, I think. Not checking all of them until morning.

Oh no -- so sorry to hear that, Caroline! It's been quite some time since we've had a significant hail storm here (now I've probably jinxed myself!), but lower Michigan had a bad one recently that damaged a lot of the commercial apple crop. Sad

My gardening efforts are mainly a hobby pursuit, but there are farmers north of the city who had their wheat crops totally destroyed by the hail. Some will have crop insurance, but it is disheartening as this would be just a few weeks from harvest for them.

That kind of thing always makes me thankful to not be in agriculture to make my living... bad enough when it happens in our home gardens. Sad

I am lucky the storm only damaged the plants.
One apartment building had the roof torn off by the strong winds.

Caroline, I saw the videos of the hail on the news yesterday, that was some storm. Blinking Sorry it damaged your plants, and very sorry for the farmers that work so hard planting the crops. Sad

It hit the center of town. My daughters' gardens were not touched by hail.
The tomatoe plants look like Charlie Brown's Xmas tree!
Some can be salvaged, but I am going on to next year by sowing biennials and perennials.

Not a lot you can do but go on, still disappointing after all you put into in. Sad

Yes, disheartening after all the work, but best not to dwell on the damage and move on.
Today I am moving bricks. A neighbour had an old brick planter taken out, and they did not want the bricks. They were glad I offered to take the bricks as it is costly to take heavy objects to the landfill. I am using some to edge beds, and some larger ones as stepping stones. And some to build a box for clematis to grow near the fence.

That's a great reuse of the bricks, when new they are quite expensive, so good deal for you.

Yes, I had looked at them, and anything brick or concrete is expensive.

We had hail for the first time I remember in actually many years a few weeks ago
It dd not do any damage even though some were the diameter of a half-dollar.
I gathered some up and filled a glass and poured warmer spring water over them.
It had a refreshing taste you do not get out even the best bottled water, so I went out an filled another glass.
