I have a tiny growth on one of the leaves of one of my Elephant Ears plants. Has anyone seen one of these growths and does anyone know what it is?

Welcome! linjarvis,
That is pretty strange. Sorry, I have no clue but there is an ATP member who grows quite a few varieties of this plant.

@Swayback,, have you any idea? Thank You!

Whoa!
I think your alocasia may have been abducted and probed by aliens...

Never seen anything quite like that before... @lariann has way more experience than I do!

Great pic, thanks for sharing it and welcome. I wouldn't be too worried about it, but I'm very interested to see if any one else has seen anything like that!
Please tree mail me for trades, I'm ALWAYS actively looking for more new plants, and love to trade!

I'm going with a very above average protuberance, I'd love to have a plant that would regularly spit those out!

HI & welcome, Lin!

What the...? I have no idea either, but somebody probably will.

Edited to correct spelling of name. By the time I scrolled back to the typing box, I still had the sound, bot had lost the spelling.

Hi Lin and welcome to ATP! I'm wondering if that's a reaction of the leaf to some kind of attack .. perhaps an insect laid an egg?
Human beings, who are almost unique in having the ability to learn from the experience of others, are also remarkable for their apparent disinclination to do so.

Welcome to ATP Lin! Thanks for the excellent photos. I've only seen images of similar appendages on Xanthosoma. There's even a species named for it's tendency to have leafy appendages on the underside of the leaf,

Please, can someone with a scientific mind (not me *Blush* ) read this article? It is about 'naturally occurring ectopic growths in certain Xanthosoma...etc.
Perhaps there will be a clue in this article? Shrug!

These are PDFs; they take a minute or two to load.

Similar article; look on page 9, image (b) and if you stretch your imagination it looks like a very short version of the growth in question.
http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com...

You could try using the key words 'ectopic growth Xanthosoma' and these PDFs should pop up in the search results.

Hmm - I went to the links - wonder if there is anything in English?????
The appendage is only on one leaf, Zencat. I grew this from the same bulbs last year but never had this before.
Swayback - you referred to my plant as "alocasia." Is that the name of this Elephant Ears as my other one is known as "Blue Hawaii"?

It looks like alocasia odora, but don't take my word for it... Blue Hawaii is a colocasia, these are the 2 main types of elephant ears, xanthosoma is another large aroid that folks in the states call elephant ears, caladiums are another common cousin.
Feel free to check out the tropicals aroid subforums, they're packed with info and pics of elephant ears and the like, fun plants!

Hi Lin and Welcome! from me too ... I'm also Lin (Linda). Smiling

Your Elephant Ear with the unusual growth looks to be an Alocasia as Sway suggested: The Elephant Ears (Alocasia) Database

Your Blue Hawaii is probably Elephant's Ear (Colocasia esculenta Royal Hawaiianยฎ Blue Hawaii)

It looks correct to me in Swayback's post to her, it links to her profile. She may not be visiting ATP on a regular basis though.
