Lin's Gardens have actually turned into Lin and Paul's. I became ill in 2005 and my husband has had to take over the more difficult physical jobs in the garden and this year, even to the deadheading! I still manage to get my hands in, particularly when he isn't looking, and when days aren't too humid and hot. I love my gardens. We have a small residential lot on a corner and we have 13 gardens - some small and some a fair size.

Lin, sorry to hear you have been ill. That's very frustrating on many levels, including being unable to work in your gardens. Kudos to your dear hubby for pitching in!
Your gardens are lovely and well tended. I like them all very much, but the shed garden might be a slight favorite.
Take good care of yourself, Lin! Group hug

Jeanie - thanks! The shed garden is one of my favs too - the window boxes are a treat. I also love the North shade garden but you have to be careful of the mosquitoes when working in it. They are worse there than along the end of the shed garden or the Cedar Hedge garden that are against the neighbours cedars. Lin

Mosquitos are bad here too, but gnats are the bane of my existence. Just went to the doctor yesterday because half of my left leg has been red and itchy for 6 days from 3 gnat bites. Benadryl puts me into lala land, but I have been taking it, with little improvement. Now on prednisone for a week Sighing!

Jeanie - knats, joy oh joy. I was talking of mosquitoes but I can honestly say as often as they bother me flying all about me, I've probably only had a couple of bites this year and little to no reaction to them. They seem to stick their stinger in and immediately pull back out. I guess they don't like my blood type or something. Hornets are the the worst for me. I seem to be a bee magnet, particularly the last half of Aug (now) to mid Sept when they are dozier. If I join my husband on the patio after dinner he could have been out there for ages and within 10-15 mins of me joining him, there are several bees buzzing about and all about me. If they are in the garden they gravitate to me. I can be watering and look down and 3 could be on my tummy and I freak out and run for the house. One time living about 45 miles south of here, I was working in the garden and black wasps were buzzing around and next thing I knew I looked up and a bunch of them were headed for me and I ran to the kitchen door and several actually hit the glass on the door as it slammed shut behind me. I don't get reactions other than the expected EXTREME (and I do mean extreme for me) pain and an irritated spot but no allergic type reaction. I have to take Reactine every day like a 24 hr Benadryl anyway so I can eat certain foods. Yesterday, we were going about the garden with company and I had run into the house once and they finished up without me. Then I joined them on the patio and sure enough, I had to move us all inside, I couldn't stay out. She said she was somewhere for a corn roast and they had Plastic bags hung up with pennies and water and no bees of any type. Might work for your gnats. We discontinued our penny here and I might have trouble finding any Canadian ones! I do have fake hornet nests we forgot to hang this year and they work not bad. Good luck with the gnats. I don't envy you the Prednisone. I was on it for my Crohn's Disease from May to Sept one year 8 a day and then weaned off around the time I had to have surgery. Not a nice drug! Hang in there. Lin

I am a mosquito and gnat magnet for sure, not so much with bees. However, I tangled with a nest of yellow jackets last summer and do not care to ever repeat the experience. I unknowingly disturbed a nest--they swarmed me and chased me into the house and were in my clothes repeatedly stinging me. I ripped off my clothes in the kitchen, grabbed a meat tenderizer hammer out of the drawer and pounded the heck out of my clothes. I killed at least half a dozen. I got stung quite a few times. Not only do the stings really hurt, but they continue to itch for a couple weeks. Apparently I am not allergic, but I was definitely miserable for awhile. They are REALLY mean suckers!

I don't have much trouble with prednisone as long as it is just a 5-day course. The side effects begin in earnest if you take it longer than that.
