Hi guys! I know sometimes I run across an interesting article and I want to post it where everyone can see it, but sometimes I feel weird making a new thread just for that. And some of us don't venture outside our threads and into the forum as a whole as often as we should so we miss things. So I thought I'd start a thread dedicated to news items we see that we want to share with the rest of the forum.

I'll start it off with this one I read about possible extinction of butterflies in the UK. @glengarry23 posted two of the butterflies for us earlier in the April thread - the Green Veined White and the Speckled Wood. Even the Cabbage White is at risk, if you can believe that!

You can read the whole article and look at the pictures here: http://www.bbc.com/news/scienc...

Jim, you can see the number of views at the top of the page and it looks like plenty of people are reading it. Maybe they just don't have much to say right now. I kind of envisioned this as a place to post the news, and if people want to discuss they can, or they can post another article, etc.

I think we're all concerned about losing species. Here in Florida we have a lot of endangered species. Two butterflies were added to the list this year - the Florida Leafwing and Bartram's Hairstreak. Our biggest problem is developers. So we won't look like the desert; we'll look like Atlanta. And maybe Atlantis if the ocean levels increase. Tampa is a really sprawled-out region and the rest of Florida isn't much better. I've posted some articles about the fight to protect some rare pine rocklands habitat (where the Bartram's Hairstreak lives) down in Miami in the past and if I see anything new, I'll post it. Of course, we also have plenty of birds that nest here on our beaches. We have lots of really great volunteers who come out and watch the nests and educate beachgoers about the birds and why it's important not to disturb them. They do the same thing with sea turtle nests.

I don't really have anything relevant to add truthfully , however thinking that it takes at lest 2 to 3 million people to preserve a few lots of ground , and that Nuclear weapons and poison Says that nothing is Globally secure ,
when you add add things like Red algae and possible Moon Roll distortion from space
The Nature of Things .
It is difficult (or getting that way ) to preserve anything . Nice Folks are watching and giving a few minutes on weekend or at times to try to do what (we) they can Thumbs up

As some of you know, I'm a bit younger than the average user on here. I graduated high school in 1997 and grew up when the Red Hot Chili Peppers had their biggest hits. Imagine my surprise at reading that their bassist, Flea, has become a full-fledged beekeeper! How cool is that? Hopefully, he can use his celebrity to bring more awareness to the plight of bees.

How the evolutionary arms race between caterpillars and their host plants gave us condiments. This is one of the coolest caterpillar articles I've read!

Some good news about our bee friends. It seems a population of bees studied in Ithaca, NY has developed a resistance to disease after being exposed to the Varroa Mite. Check out all the news here: http://entomologytoday.org/201...

The Tampa Bay Times printed an excerpt of this article today and I wanted to read the whole thing. For you hummingbird lovers, this has some great information. It covers the importance of the hummingbird to the Aztec culture, male aggressive behaviors, and that pesky nectar addiction. Check it out! http://www.slate.com/blogs/wil...

Thanks, Becky. Some of us are guilty (me included) of not going into the main forum very often so if someone posts an article or news item, I find it doesn't get a lot of attention. I thought if we put them all in one place, people could just watch one thread and keep up with any news that comes up regarding our bees, butterflies, and birds.
