I can see from wandering about the 100's of lilies here some of them have seed pods on them.......is that the result of the bees or nature doing that.??
I was not sure if all lilies produce seeds no matter what and some are fertile and some are not..........
this is the first time I have had pods in the gardens here
last year there was nothing but this year the honey bees got here early and stayed....

I read the sticky on the seeds but it does not explain fertilization by nature all that well
the ones that I crossed pollinated are in foil

can someone fill me in
and remember I am just learning all this.....

It is likely some type of insect that tries to collect nectar. Maybe bees or moths at night. Works the same way any other flower works. Bug goes in for nectar and gets covered in pollen, then goes to the next flower and rubs against reproductive organs and you will have some pollinations that way.

so are these are fertilized pods that will produce lilies??
I see a lot of regale have their own pods and are likely regales
but the other ones have no idea who crossed with who but if some might be fertile might like to take a chance and see what nature did ...

I understand a bee goes from one to the other one but not sure if they are fertile?

I have had a zillion huge moths and for some reason tons of honey bees this year.........likely from the orchard up the street....... they have lots of bee hives there.........

My guess is you will get empty pods to pods with a few to many seeds. Just because a pod grows doesn't mean you will get seeds.

My only guess is Always Plant Chaff. If that's not it I don't know the answer and I'm not sure if I'm right now!

I read on here somewhere and not sure where it was that you can get Chaff by crossing two lilies yourself......
not sure if that means that none of the seeds are fertile then??
not all of the lilies have pods here in the garden

No idea what APC is

Always plant chaff = APC

I apologize for the confusion! I forget sometimes that not everyone is as fond of acronyms as I am. Big Grin

Well, I've learnt something. I had no idea what that acronym meant. But I agree, always plant chaff!

Will some of them produce seeds or will most of them just be chaff?
I read somewhere not sure how too do this but with a light you can tell
how do I know the seeds are ready to be taken off the plant??
most of them are deep deep green yet....

I think you're referring to "candling". If you transilluminate seeds with a strong white light you can actually see the embryo inside. (If it is large enough.)

Sometimes the embryo in the seeds will die leaving a thin papery seed that is the chaff. Sometimes things don't fully go to full term with the seeds and it leaves chaff.
