I've been having fun attempting to find ids for some noids, and have recently had some successes, which spurs me forward. Using our ATP data base and searching for characteristics turned up this one that I'm pretty sure is a match.





I've found you sometimes have to play around with different combinations and descriptions, like trying violet, purple, or wine or cream, brown, etc. Another example is you may need to switch between bitone and bicolor.

Recently found a possible id for a soft brown historic thanks to a photo Sherry (@Henhouse) posted of Glen Ellen. I'll be growing these side by side to make a more positive assessment (thanks Sherry!).




Now here's one that kinda has me scratching my head as to how to describe it. How would you describe the colors and color classification?

The orange beard is a standout feature, but would they call it orange, or tangerine, or what?

Or maybe even red, but I need to try all 3 and see what comes up. I wish there were boxes to check for beard color like the other color options. I just tried search options bicolor, lavender and wine, and tangerine beard and came up with this:

Not a match, but taking me in the right direction...

I love this iris and would love to identify it. It seems unique enough to be a possibility of finding the id, but its another I'm not sure how to describe it.

By using bicolor, orange and white, tangerine beard, I came up with:
Tall Bearded Iris (Iris 'Signpost')

Not a very good shot of the beard, but it is a bright orange. This one is listed as lavender pink and wine purple bitone

Pam, that does look close! And the name is ringing a bell too. A lot of my noids came from trades when I was just looking for a variety of colors of bearded irises. Many came with names, I just didn't keep up with them. Often when I see the name it sparks a memory.....yayyy!!! ...sometimes I CAN remember things, LOL!


The form and colors look right, but none of the data base photos show as bright a beard. Does beard color vary under differing conditions?

For the orange and white one, I just tried switching the search parameters from bicolor to plicata and came up with this:

The orange isn't a plicata in my view.

Your first flower is a bi-color--lavender standards, purple falls with violet edge--orange beards ?????

The angle of the photo can pick up different characteristics of the beard. Here is a side view.




Not completely in focus - but you can see more orange. Shows better from above. But I don't have a picture from that angle.

Neal, this is a great thread idea. It can help identify our iris, teach terminalogy, and learn how to use the database better. For me this is a win-win.

Neal -- check out Sweeter Than Wine for your lavender bi-color.

I thought of that one too Mary Ann, and checked it out, don't think it's a match.

Lucy, I wouldn't have thought it a plicata either, but the one from the data base looks even less like a plicata to me. Some of the designations are kinda iffy to me.

Sweeter than Wine also looks close. In some photos the beards look brighter than others.

close to the correct plant. Not sure about the white ends of the beards from your photo.

How about Liaison?

Liason has white tips on the beard, don't see that in Neal's shot.

Neal, when I first opened and looked at your orange one, it reminded me of one I have:

I guess I was looking at Mary Ann's pic of Sweeter Then Wine, thinking that was Neal's NOID...Dahhh, but here's my Sweeter Then Wine, it has a tiny bit of white on the tips, but not much. Anyway, Neal, if you want I can ship you a test plant of both Liaison and Sweeter Then Wine if you'd like.

I have "Ominous Stranger", but it took a hit this year. Remind me and I will send you one next year so you can verify it.

When I saw your first picture, my thought was Camelot Rose, but it doesn't have the lighter rim on the falls. I think it is Latin Lover. Liason has more lines around the hafts as does Sweeter Than Wine which also has wider falls. There is more color in the standards in most pictures I have seen of Latin Lover, but that could be weather or soil, etc.
