Findhorn is older--but I guess technically they don't have a food forest.

I like the ecovillage. Nice! I saw a program on a tv series "Growing a Greener World" that highlighted what I would call a "subdivision" centered around an organic farm, maintaining their own rainwater filtering systems, CSA, farm internships, various sustainable farm-oriented business funding, their own school system, etc. I'm not sure about passive energy systems. It's located in Lake County, IL - I think in the Naperville area.

There is a similar intentional farming community in Tennessee called "The Farm". Back in the 60s it was a commune, --sometimes a nudist community (!). But it is still in existence and the people there practice sustainable farming.

Crumbs! I wish I had been more knowledgeable about all of this a few years ago! DD lived in Franklin and Santa Fe, TN and moved to MI a couple of years ago. Our final TN road trip had us driving from Santa Fe to Chattanooga. Thanks for posting that!

Mentioned The Farm to DD and she knows all about it and has been there. She was considering using them for an umbrella school for homeschooling her daughter. And I missed it.

We were working near there one year, and were invited over for a party. We brought the director of Mound State Archaeological Park with us. One of the party hostesses attended the party in the nude. Poor director was so shocked, it took him a week to get over it and probably never did completely. The lady--and the other party attendees--seemed to think it was perfectly normal to attend a party (as hostess) in the nude. Since then, Ive seen cook books, and other interesting productions put out by The Farm.

Sandor Katz was at one time at The Farm, but later was affiliated with another community in Tennessee.

Very interesting article on fermentation. While DD and I made sauerkraut a few years back, I haven't really explored it much. Interesting point on using fermented foods to mitigate the probable damage from chlorinated tap water.

Thanks for posting that link. DD had fermenting sauerkraut on her kitchen counters for a few weeks. DH is Polish and I am German so we both grew up with it although always served hot.
