I don't often open the main forum section, but was looking for a spot to more specifically post a question, so reviewed the forum categories. Lo and behold, found a whole new forum section called Plant of the Day, with one forum recently created (daylily). I assume the intent will be to add in other plant groups as interest warrants. Great idea. But, kind of wondering why this is at the top of the list rather than down by the specific plant forums - perhaps just to get noticed better because it's new? Personally, I'd like to see Gardening - All Things Plants be the #1 placed forum again, along with the other more general forums. Just my two cents, and not a big deal.

I'm not currently sure I have it set to show the order. I created the category and it stuck it at the top. Smiling I'll move it down.

That Daylily of the Day is a great thing that @beckygardener just started doing a couple weeks ago. I definitely hope to see it adopted in other forums, too. It's a project of mine to pursue soon.

That is a very cool idea. How do you get a new thread started for a 'Plant of the day' thread?

The entire thing is quite automated, actually. If you'd like to do it for a forum you moderate, send me a tree me and I'll begin the process of getting it setup for you.

Was the 'Plant of the Day' birth advertised to the members or did it just sort of happen? If there was an announcement, I missed it.
I notice the Daylily of the Day thing but since I'm not a fan of daylilies I mostly ignored it (no offense to people who love Daylilies); just thought it was for the Daylily people, not for everyone else.

It just happened. Becky did it on her own initiative and once she had it off the ground, I came in behind her and made the software to run what she had started.

I saw those Daylily of the day threads in the daylily forum. But I don't see it in other forums. For instance I don't see a variety of the day in the Iris forum.

I think 'we' have to create each one of these special sections, or ask Dave to help us create them.

That's my read as well. Perhaps the iris moderator would be a good place to start (assuming there is one, I don't frequent that forum). Or even better, perhaps Becky could do up a how-to article on getting one started and maintained.

I spent a great deal of time extending the feature to allow it to work with other forums. Plumerias and Sempervivum will have the feature enabled in those forums VERY soon (perhaps tomorrow.) Other forums are certainly invited to participate. They just need to contact me by tree mail and I'll handle the details, and give them the training on how to use the system.

I just came across this thread.....

For those wanting to set up such a feature on their favorite plant species forum, be sure to let folks know that they can earn an acorn for a performance review of any particular cultivar. I think sincerely that is why the Daylily of the Day feature has been a success so far. Folks want ways to earn more acorns for the NARR, so they are motivated to post about a particular cultivar that they own.

Dave just recently set up a system message to let anyone who owns a particular cultivar know that there is a thread dedicated to that cultivar of the day where they can post a performance review and earn an acorn in the process. The reason this new feature is desirable is because when I go looking for information about a particular cultivar (whether it be daylilies, roses, salvia, etc.). I have no idea how it will grow in my zone, climate, and area nor do I know if it is a good cultivar to obtain. The way I did the daylily of the day .... I did a poll among the active members on that forum. I asked them to list their top 10 favorite daylilies that they own. These aren't just any daylilies, these are daylilies that folks value for a reason. So those are the daylilies that I am featuring this first go around. When we feature all those listed from the first poll (after a few months), then I will take another poll and feature those. And so on ..... By also having folks list their favorites, I KNOW I will get at least a few performance reviews because people do own them here on ATP.

I also post a little info about the hybridizer at the beginning since many folks on the Daylily Forum are into hybridizing as well. It's interesting to know info about the hybridizer and sometimes you get ideas for your own hybridizing crosses by reading a little something about them and their methods.

I had to do internet searches constantly for info about different cultivars but never really felt like I got much information. It has turned out to be a great feature where folks can add to the thread at any time, earn an acorn once a year for that cultivar, and share why they love or perhaps dislike a cultivar. There is no other website that I know of that features a daily cultivar and allows members who own it to comment on it's performance and why they like it or not. Information all in one place! Just another great feature here on ATP!

Dave, thanks for helping me get the Daylily of the Day feature off the ground and for making it much easier now because of your automatic thread creation (which I still edit to add extra information). And the brand new system message to members who own the cultivar of the day! We have already had members express their appreciation for this new feature. It has helped them determine which plants to purchase for their garden. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You!

Thank you, Becky, for driving this new feature! You've done great!

Marilyn, right now the system is limited to forums that are linked to their respective databases. Since we have one forum but two custom databases, I can't set this up.

I could setup ONE of them, either Salvias or Agastache, but I can't do both.

Is that why I can't include S. heuffelii and the globiferum types of semps?
