Gonna finish tomorrow. Move my koi from old pond over week or so. It will have a 2x4 with chicken wire cover and filter through a 50 gal barrel with rock.

Mark, your new pond looks terrific! I, myself, always like the looks of a more formal design such as yours. Many of my customers try to create a "natural" looking pond with irregular borders and then spend forever trying to hide the liner.
I particularly like the use of the pavers around the edge of your pond. It adds the "clean" edge to your pond and, to me, makes the whole thing more functional. You can get up close and mess with your Koi more easily.
This fall I am going to put in a 12X24 formal for my Koi. I was going to use foundation blocks to create the edge (making it raised so a person could sit on it) but now, looking at yours, maybe I will do pavers instead.

thanks! there is a storm on in seattle so i cant finish it today but i got the 2 x 4 inner edgeing in and the paver sand swept before the rain. should run a plate compactor over it but... alot of time the rain and time will do it for you! also i need to raise some of the pavers up to match the 2x4. its not level around the edge of pond i got tired of digging and figured i would add materiel but did not realize how out of level it was. next time gonna level out a shelf around the pond. If there is a next time . i am hoping for 20 years from this one. I had a natural edge pond and could not keep the edge clean. to much trouble removing dead vegetation and weeds.

yes that is a fire pit. i decided not to move it so i can watch the pond next to a fire. we will see how much ash is a issue

Basically done except barrels. koi .racoon sheild. L shaped cedar fencing to hide liner and a bit more sand around edges. Cheers!

If I ever build a new pond it will be like yours. Mine has the 'trying to look natural' think going on and you are right. Just doesn't work for me and is a lot of effort for naught. I like your clean lines, and also easier to keep clean.

If the sides of the pond are going straight down, will their be much of a predator problem? I had one that went straight down for a couple years and didn't have any problems, but may of been coincidence.

My understanding is straight sides on the pond help reduce predators from wading in to grab your fish. But I watched a heron standing on the edge and dive into my pond, grab a big goldfish and take off with it. It surprised me since I thought herons waded in to get fish. My pond has straight sides but isn't deep along the edges. So there are varying factors. I don't have raccoons that I know of but herons come by during the fall and spring migration so I put a net over the pond in the fall and leave it until mid to late spring. That has worked keeping the herons from snacking on my fish.

Looks like a good start. You related to the California Mallon's? Tashi for instance? I wish my pond was like yours rather than a odd looking shape with rock around it. Yours will be so much easier to clean. Speaking of which, how will you clean the bottom? Filters? A bottom drain/filter would make it a snap.

I don't know the California Mallons I have no plans to clean the bottom I don't like having holes in the liner if I have to rent a pond vacuum I will the filters going to be the waterfall box it's going to get gravel








That last piece of PVC is going to go on the bottom underneath the gravel with holes in it I ran out of 45's and I just want to get the water moving today

Well, that PVC under the gravel should work just like a vacuum in a indoor fish tank. Wouldn't it? Will suck the water and crap down through the gravel and into the above ground filter??

pots in biofilter are lillys, 2 hardy and one tropical?
