I don't own this cultivar, but my daughter has it in her garden. We tend to not buy the same cultivars, since we enjoy each other's gardens frequently and that way, we get to enjoy and try even more daylily cultivars. My daughter only lives a 15 minute drive from me, so our growing conditions are similar. This cultivar is a very strong grower here in Eastern Ontario. It multiplies quickly and blooms well. It was planted as a potted plant early in the spring and bloomed that summer. The bloom holds that nice dark colour very well. It looks very pretty next to El Desperado in my daughter's garden. It has been very hardy, even through the past two very cold winters.
I took this picture at her garden on August 10th.

A friend gave it to me and I had to pot it up. It bloomed the next year but died in the pot during the following very cold winter.

touchofsky - How neat to have TWO gardens to enjoy daylilies at! Thumbs up

Arlene - Thanks for your evaluation! So sorry that you lost Bela Lugosi.

Bela Lugosi is new to my garden. I received a small clump as a bonus gift from a nearby daylily garden. It continued to bloom even after transplanting in late June, and holds its color really well in the heat of the day with full sun. I will add more stats next year as they become available.

I have grown Bela for several years and never multiplied well for me but always bloomed. I acquired a large clump of it this year after it was done blooming so no bud count until next year here. Lack of fertilizer probably contributed to poor performance.

I have grown Bela for five years now and it has made no attempt to increase for me. It had a couple more flowers this year, but I will be leaving that one behind when I move.

I have had Bela Lugosi for about 4 years, however, because it usually blooms at the end of May or first of June, I have missed it the past couple of years. We will be going back to FL in several weeks and I hope to see how it is doing. In traveling back and forth it is hard to keep up with what is blooming and what is disappearing from the garden. Sad

I was looking forward to seeing this one after I put it in last June (2014) and it bloomed nicely for a new plant. Unfortunately, it didn't bloom this year and I had no increase in it either. I really like it though. The color is a very deep wine red/purple for me with a bright, beacon-like, yellow to green throat!

I haven't had this one for long, but I do remember it bloomed right after transplanting, and was a beautiful dark color. It does not hold up to the heat very well, so on hot afternoons, it doesn't look great. I am keeping it for further evaluation.

Have had Bela for several years and the increase is poor. But it keeps blooming for me and I love the color so much, I will be keeping it. Plus, who could let a plant named Bela Lugosi go by the wayside? Lovey dubby

I have grown 'Bela Lugosi' for many years. It is hardy with no problem to my zone 4 weather and my growing conditions. It is interesting that there are registered offspring with it as a pod parent as I have pollinated all its flowers for many years and never had a pod mature. I think it is pod-sterile.

"Bela Lugosi" is an okay plant, but "Women Seeking Men" is much better for pod setting, blooming and increase.

I just went to my local daylily supplier to see if they had Women Seeking Men, and they do, but it looks lighter than Bela Lugosi. I know pictures are deceiving, how would you describe the colour? Here is the link:

I have had Bela Lugosi in my garden for years it increases very slowly but the deep velvety bloom makes it a keeper in my eyes.

I agree with Karen. Mine is very deep purple and the Women Seeking Men is more pink (at least the photo from @touchofsky). Mine holds its color pretty well because it is shaded in the afternoon.

Maurice,

I don't get many pods to mature, but a few do set every year. The summers are relatively cool and comfortable here, and pods set on most things fairly easily. My 'Bela' is growing in dappled shade, with good moisture.

Everyone used to think Matt was pod-sterile, however many years ago I set several pods on a rebloom scape. Since then, I've noticed this same "rebloom fertility" with many cultivars.

Thank you for that information. I have managed over many years to set a couple of pods on 'Matt'; also set a couple of pods on 'Ed Murray'. I have not had rebloom here on any of the three cultivars. I might try them in the shade and pushed with high nitrogen fertilizer to see if I can get rebloom and pod fertility.
