Volunteer, tiny flowers. Very succulent (takes forever to shrivel & finish dying after being pulled.) TIA!

Not White Velvet (Tradescantia sillamontana) but it does look to be Commelina of some type, perhaps Virginia Day-Flower (Commelina virginica) ?

TY for the reply, Porkpal & Lin! Appreciate trying to help very much!

I've narrowed it down to one of those 2 species mentioned in subject line (I think,) but can't see the diff between those from other peoples' pics. Was hoping to maybe hear from someone who has an ID key (and unlike me) understands enough plant anatomy words to use it. I can't find one to try to muddle through.

More pics available if needed, just need to know what to capture.

Remembered I took this pic of it when I started growing.

I think you need to look at finer details, e.g. the leaf sheath and spathe on Commelina virginica ..

http://www.missouriplants.com/...

C. communis ..

http://www.missouriplants.com/...

http://www.southeasternflora.c...

C. diffusa ..

http://www.missouriplants.com/...

C. erecta ..

http://www.wildflowersoftexas....

C. caroliniana is difficult to find except on Japanese sites.

The list for Alabama ..

TYVM, Janet. I will take more pics in the morning. This plant looks like it's dying all afternoon, no flowers open.

I've given up using luirig.altervista as a resource at all, found so many inaccurate pics over the yrs. The top 3 pics at that link page don't look like C. communis because there's no brown dot on the big yellow things, and the white wisker-like things end in blue balls. The missouriplants pic shows C. communis so well, much bigger flowers. C. erecta also has much bigger blooms.

USDA plants also mentions C. caroliniana but if it's so rare that nobody can get a pic of it to put on reliable databases, it's probably not what sprouted in my yard in about 4 places. I'd discounted that species also for that reason.

I have Commelina growing wild here but the blue is more intense.

Commelina flowers usually only open in the morning.

I only use lurig. altervista to get a list of plants for a particular state, and if there's line drawings which might help.

Hi Cindy! I was really hoping this would be C. erecta, which I would welcome, but then it bloomed... I don't think anybody not looking for the bloom of this plant would ever notice it.

If you look at the links Janet provided you can see wonderful pics of C. communis & erecta. There are some great pics of both in the DB here also. Both have significantly sized flowers, and are reportedly present in your state on USDA plants. If you can't decide, take some pics & start a discussion for it. Look for open blooms in the mornings.

The flower color of C. communis is pretty much the same color as my native one here. I'll have to hunt some down to check.

I'm almost positive it is either C. diffusa or C. caroliniana. Without closer inspection I couldn't guess which.
I have C. erecta, C. virginica and C. diffusa.

This is C. diffusa

The spathe on your plant is distinct (open from end to end) so that rules out everything except Commelina communis, C. dianthifolia, C. caroliniana, and C. diffusa. The closest record of C. dianthifolia to you is in West Texas. The spathe is the wrong color and the flower is the wrong color and structure for C. communis, which leaves only C. caroliniana and C. diffusa. The closest C. caroliniana is recorded to you is Baldwin County. Although C. diffusa is not recorded in your county, it is recorded in every county surrounding you including those in Florida, so it is likely in your county also. The only thing I can positively see that makes me think it is C. diffusa is the spathe shape. Flora of North America say the the spathe of C. caroliniana is "not at all to slightly falcate" (sickle shaped), C. diffusa is "usually distinctly falcate". Yours to me appears to be distinctly falcate.
