Sadly Summer is winding down and - not sadly, it is time for the September thread. :-)Temps are still in the lower nineties though around here in NJ.
I will start with my Habenarias - Habenaria medusa is now finally starting to open. I am happy to see six spikes this year and it will take a couple of weeks to unfurl those delicate "sprays".

I am keeping the Habenaria erichmichaelii inside now to enjoy the pretty display.

and there is the teensy Macroclinium manabinum, I am surprised to see a few blooms on this.

And Bc Angel Lace opens the usual single bloom

My two Dens are the only ones continuing to bloom for me right now.

But - you have anything but nothing!! Even when truly not a single bloom opens for us in time, there is always the most valuable sharing of experience which you and so many tireless friends here do so well!

When there are no blooms (other than that NOID Den.), all I can do is "talk". I have actually had several in sheath in August, but these sell quickly since I don't put a premium on my plants that are in bloom, bud, or sheath.

I am really happy about the medusa too, I was holding my breath if it were to bloom a second time for me. It did and this is now the third or fourth? year it blooms. And the spike count is slowly increasing too. I am not complaining.

Love that Habenaria medusa, Ursula and you are growing it so well, it's very happy. It's always suspenseful when you have a plant that goes dormant "will it come back??". I thought for sure I'd lost my Sarcoglottis Sceptroides when it didn't pop up this spring but here it is with lots of nice leaves. Didn't bloom, though.


I am waiting impatiently for my Habenaria rhodocheila to open some flowers, maybe tomorrow. Or today later if the weather continues to be dry . . . relatively.

Just one new bloomer here today, another 'maybe Yellow Bird'. Third spike on Renate is open with very vivid flowers, as the first spike fades to pink and white.

I find that the Sarcoglottis sceptrodes usually blooms in the Spring for everybody!
Your plant looks great. Mine wasn't so hot and it also put some better growth on this Summer, so there is hope.

Yes, Ursula, I had approximately a dozen sceptrodes bloom and they all bloomed in the spring. Mine are all potted since they have to come in during the fall/winter months and (of course) they are for sale. It is easier to un-pot than it is to dig up.

Those are pretty flowers, Gigi. A lot more "pop" than my NOID.

They're great, Gigi. The white splash in the middle makes them look like they are glowing.

I love all things 'Medusa" Ursula, and yours is certainly gorgeous! That little Macroclinium is stunning, I've never seen anything like that!

Off topic of our blooms, but since I don't have a lot blooming at the moment I thought I'd ask a couple of questions. Hoping you Vanda experts can weigh in on this.

Two questions this am:
1) barring the possibility that I clipped these by accident yesterday when trimming out some Erwinia, what do you think ate this? I saw no snail/slug trail. The plant is hanging well off the ground. A mouse, rat, or squirrel had a much easier access to the plant next door. This one would take effort to get to the crown. I checked and no caterpillar, cockroach, or grasshopper could be found. Any ideas? (I personally think I clipped by accident as they look pretty evenly cut).

2) Same plant. Are there Vandas that have ridges in the leaves? Both of the V. Gypsy's Rocket have ridged leaves. Or was this some sort of cultural problem? Even the new ones look ridged. Cross is (V. Manuvadee x Madame Rattana)

I like this Vanda very much, nice color and nice shape!

Regarding the clipped Vanda, I could imagine it was an accidental cut.
And about the ridges, full- terete Vandas might have that ridged characteristic, if the plant looks otherwise healthy with good roots etc, I would chalk it up to that.

Except - I just looked at the parents, they are both strap-leaved Vandas as far as I can tell. And the Vanda Gypsy's Rocket is also strap-leaved. Strange! Either this is mis -identified or there is something weird going on.

I only have my two old ones and the seedlings. I would be considered a novice when it comes to Vanda.
