The heat's finally winding down, so we should have some nice blooms in my region for the next two or three months. It has been disheartening to watch the effects of heat and drought on the roses here.

The thumbnail photo is September Mourn, a Meilland floribunda.

Palatine's really disappointing me this year. Most of the new roses are solid pink. I like pink, but I prefer roses with more than one color.

Where is the Kordes' Jubilee rose? I've been waiting and waiting for Palatine to offer the Kordes' Jubilee many of us fell in love with when it was the rose on the home page of the Kordes site a few years ago. What a beauty!

http://www.kordes-rosen.com/ga...

It still isn't available anywhere on this continent.

I will certainly get my order in early with Palatine- its a tough wait to order in fall and wait till April, but it should make winter a bit more tolerable. Jubilee is gorgeous! It would surely be on my order if they offered it!

We're seeing some milder temps and the nights are cool, but it's somewhat dry now. I'd become so unaccustomed to watering over the wet summer that everything got pretty crispy before it occurred to me to drag out the soaker hose. The Japanese beetles are dropping off now, so I'm getting a few nice blooms.

I'm loving the contrast of the hardy ageratum with BG

Golden Fairy Tale is a beast! I've never had a first year rose get this big, about 5 1/2' tall now. It has a wonky shape because it had gotten quite tall early on and was whipped over during a storm.

What a huge and healthy ageratum! Golden Fairy Tale does have a wonky shape, but I like it. In general, I dislike uniformity in gardens and prefer a more romantic look.

I guess I won't be ordering anything from Palatine this year. The new roses aren't that exciting, and the older ones are ones I already have or ones I don't want.

Besides, this is going to be a year of major changes in my garden. The protracted drought has finished off many of my own-root weaklings. I really welcome the need to get rid of them. I can't believe I carefuly nursed roses that I planted in 2008, for example, and then saw only one or two blooms in all that time despite my best efforts. I'm better off without them, but I wish I had never bought them at all. I probably could buy a mansion with the money I wasted on own-root hybrid teas from Vintage Gardens, Rogue Valley, and some other nurseries.

So, that's one change, but there's also the PG&E gas pipe that will be replaced and will eliminate many roses currently planted on or near the PG&E easement.

Then there's the big fish pond. It is completely dry. This may be due to evaporation, of course. I have always replenished the water lost to evaporation in the past, but this year's conservation efforts have precluded that practice. If it's just evaporation, the winter rains should refill the pond, but if it's due to a leak, I'll have a new 20' x 14' flower bed to fill. I'm almost hoping for a leak. The pond was not a good idea. It took a major effort to dig the hole and line it with concrete, but then every earthquake in the area would create cracks in the concrete, so I bought a liner. That liner lasted about 15 years and then had to be replaced. It has now been 15 years since the second one was installed. In the meantime, every time I filled the pond with fish, a blue heron would park itself on my roof and periodically swoop down to kil the fish. All in all, another massive waste of time, energy, and money.

Zuzu, all the changes will be a bit of a mess at the time, but it sounds like you'll be able to make good use of it. New beds are always exciting and fun to me! I typically have to make room for new plants and find places to squeeze them in. When an expanse of earth is cleared its such fun to arrange new plants without worrying about running into a bulb or something.

Hi everyone. Been not here on ATP for .. I guess months.. had lots of health issues & my yard shows the neglect. Bindweed & a horrible little morning-glory type weed took over the front, spiny lettuce took over the back, roses refusing to bloom due to drought & starvation (haven't fed since May)..

Luckily enough most of my roses survived without me babying them. I lost a few.. some didn't even break dormancy from winter. I didn't even get all the roses in the back yard pruned this spring.. bleh. But there's gonna be next year & I am not going to let things go to someplace in a handbasket!

Just made a small order from Palatine. Was superfussy this year as to what to order. I got:

Ascot - https://palatineroses.com/rose...
Dark Desire Parfuma - https://palatineroses.com/rose...
Le Petit Prince - https://palatineroses.com/rose...

I had gotten rid of my ponds in my "pond area", so I have lots of space in that area now. I also ended up getting rid of my hotwings maple tree as it refused to grow out of shrub-mode and ended up splitting in half from the last snow I got back on Mother's day (that decimated so many of my plants.. killed 2 trees... everything was leafing out & growing like mad 'cuz it was early spring, and then we get a foot of heavy-wet snow & teen temperatures for 2 days..). But 2016 is going to be a great year for my garden, even if I have to go out there & dig everything up & put down plastic plants instead!!

Oh, and Neal - I took a page out of your book and am in the process of repainting my house. Again. This time, in purples!! "Purple Surf" is the primary color & the trim is "Virtual Violet" I think.

Hi, Toni. Good to see you back. This was a bad year for my garden too. Drought and heat are not a good combination. I have big plans for next season, just as you do, including a radical pruning of almost every rose in the garden. I'm currently top-dressing the beds with lots of compost and waiting for November and December to start the bigger projects.

Zu - Was wondering if anyone here was in the fire dangerzone. We've got horrific smoke problems here. I'm looking out my window here at work & the sky is that slightly orangish tinge from the smoke.. and it's from the fires in California this time. We've had some hellacious months of smoke this year.. and none of it is from fires here in Colorado! Odd! But the drought.. that's horrible. We're not in as dire straits as California/Washington are, but pretty gosh-darned close to it.

Toni, Le Petit Prince is a luscious color - and it did not make me think of a snake swallowing an elephant - for a while.

I expect that your garden will be better than ever next year. I look forward to pictures again!

Toni, I'm looking forward to seeing photos! And I see your Palatine order is reflecting the house color- all 3 of those are on my list of considerations, Dark Desire is a sure thing.

New here to ATP. Learning so much. Hope this is this the correct place to share. Had my Pearly Gates rose in a pot for a couple of years and planted it in the ground about a month ago. It is really happy now even in the desert heat. The blooms were beautiful in the spring and it is putting on lots of buds since going in the ground. Pic from spring.

Open the link to the entry and scroll down to "Adding Actions." Click on "Upload a photo" and follow the instructions from there. Smiling

You can also import the photo to the database from this thread. Click on your photo in your original post to enlarge it and then click on "Import to database." This probably is an easier way than the first one.

So as I did loose just afew roses this past winter due to the excessive cold we had I wanted to get around to digging those few dead ones and moving others into the spots. Finially fininshed that project. Have been working on it for the past two days. I think it looks really nice now with those roses moved and bare spots filled in.

I had a section I called Rose Island and now Rose Island is gone as those were the roses I used. I will probably just plant summer squash there next year.
