I'm stumped. I feel like I have searched the Internet to identify this plant that reseeds here every year. It's really pretty but fairly resilient as I have to thin them out every summer. It is shallowly rooted. Here are some pictures:

No it is not that either.

I'm in zone 5 and it does not overwinter here, it drops seed and spreads from there.

Penstemon

As much as it looks a bit similar to penstemon, I don't think that's it either. I've scoured images of all species of penstemon.

It reminded me of the flower form of jewel weed/ touchmenot but the leaves and color were different.
