I saw a new minnie orchid, lava burst, and i was wondering is it a good beginner species... then again my brassia witch doctor is thriving i saw it growing new bulbs and roots. i repotted it into orchid medium.

Will it do well- the lava burst- mounted under a t5 lighting system.

I've had the Lava Burst 'Puanani' for years. It blooms a couple of times a year and does well for me. They get morning sun in the winter, and dappled shade all summer here. Florida sun is pretty strong. Very small sprays of pretty coral/yellow flowers.

It should not be too hard to grow. It is a warm grower that takes medium light or dappled light. Of course, the name has changed. It is now called Leomesezia [Lsz.] Lava Burst 'Puanani'.

Jim, thanks.
I saw that when I looked up the correct spelling this morning. I had to chuckle at that name. Couldn't they at least choose a name which flows a bit easier of the tongue?

I think they're making these names up as they go. If I saw a plant with that tag, I wouldn't even consider it!

Exactly! I had a conversation today with some of the orchid vendors and they said exactly that, people wouldn't know what they are looking at.

At least 1/3 of the people that attend these shows don't have a clue what they are buying to start with. That works for those sales people who sell for the mass producers. The rest of us might at least know what is likely to survive in our care. It's not like the growers have time to hold our hand, and explain how to care for them at the shows. When they start throwing these new names out all is lost. If I had enough time , and hands to carry a tablet, I suppose I could look it up, but I don't. Maybe we could all get Jim's number so we can text him for info when we get to the show. nodding

That's it, Carol! You've hit on the reason why they're changing all the names all the time - it's a conspiracy to make us all have to invest in OrchidWiz so we know the 'code'.

Even then, as you say we'd have to carry a tablet with us and look up every orchid we were thinking of buying . . . what a pain.

Alex, actually, it is not Cattleya hybrid but rather an Oncidium.
Here is the genealogy
http://www.orchid.or.jp/orchid...
Hmm, it won't let me post the correct page. So -
Take the sixth link on the left side of that page and that will get you to the Oncidium page. Now click on the lowest link which is Hwra Lava Burst and you can see the parentage of your plant.

Just in case: Leomesezia [Lsz.] Lava Burst 'Puanani' AM/AOS (Lsz. Mini-Primi x Rdza. lanceolata). That's right folks, it's now a Leomesezia.

Sorry Jim, didn't mean to be stubborn here! You are certainly correct!
This Room Genealogy uses only the old names, but it is still sometimes nice to be able to follow the whole parentage in one look.

Alex, I had no idea what you meant by "lawless romeo and juliet"
Now looking it up you are talking about Rlc / Blc Lawless Romeo 'Juliet'.....

Typo corrected.....

Yes, the preferred name is Rlc. Lawless Romeo 'Juliet' (Rlc. Toshie Aoki x Rlc. American Heritage).
