I have a question..we are to have a wet and colder winter than usual in zone 8b this year and early fall..
I do not see any ice or snow unless it is once this winter..
I have planted a Wendys wish saliva that came in a 2 and half gallon
container with good root system on September 6th...on a higher end
of the flower bed..shown here..

If it is to be real wet this year raining and colder ...perhaps below 32 some nights
should I put straw around and up under this new salvia..or will that cause it to
get too cold with wet ground and
rainy winter...even though it is on a higher
end of the flower bed?

I can try to put a tarp over it if it got down to 20 degrees at night
but I have other salvias too and want your opinion on this?

Having been a flower grower and having this garden for 15 years
I am just not sure about a colder winter here and more rain this year
is why I asked..I have not lost a salvia in that bed....in the past..

Sherri, I'm curious what you decided to do or if you found information elsewhere? I'm unfamiliar with that salvia cultivar, but have grown several species from seed, many not quite hardy here. Mulch was the only winter protection I provided and several survived a few years. We had a rough winter last year that finished off any borderline hardy varieties.

Your gardens look great!

No problem Sheri, I have trouble keeping up with threads too.

Black and Blue has proven quite hardy here too, even after some cold winters. It's huge now and blooming like crazy- the hummingbirds are loving them!

Me too!

I would have expected Wendys Wish to have survived there but you mentioned wetter than usual as I recall. I suspect that it what did for it. I've had it survive a mild and fairly dry (although not frost free) winter here in very free draining soil.
Salvia and anything unusual
