Trying to find a HT, floribunda or shrub rose that looks like the shape of a dahlia. I can't find a available source for "The Dahlia Rose". Any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I think I noted "dahlia-like arrangement of petals" in the plant data on all the ones I had seen. Go to the Rose Database "Search by characteristics" page

http://garden.org/plants/group...

Type "dahlia" (without the quote marks) into the "Other" field for "Bloom shape" and click the "Search" button. You'll get a list of 21 results.

Margie.......

Ralph Moore, the breeder, never thought the 'Dalia Rose' was a strong rose, so he kept off putting it into commerce until just a few years before he closed his nursery. So many people visiting his nursery fell in love with the bloom and begged him to introduce the rose, so he finally gave in and put it on the market.

You might want to take a look at 'Pink Poodle' ... Rose (Rosa 'Pink Poodle')

This rose, too, has dropped out of commerce, but I know a friend who is propagating it to spread it around so that it doesn't get lost and I can get in contact with her, if you are interested.

It's so sad about how many good roses disappear and are lost after a breeder dies. I am seeing fewer of Ralph's roses being offered.

For me, the plant habit is tall and narrow and very upright. I planted three of them close together to get a more "bushy" look.

ZuZu thanks for showing me how to access " the dahlia-like arrangement of petals". It always helps when you know how.

Lyn, it's funny the ones I was most attracted to were:
Hi Society (cocker) Heirloom Roses
Vintage Visalia - a pretty flor but did not get good reviews - sus. to variety of diseases and pests - that turned me off.
Pink Poodle is adorable reminds me of the coneflower Pink Poodle
Marriotta - offered by Palatine
Here's the thing, I have never cared for a mini rose - you have grow it in a container??? What do you do with it during the winter - bury the container with the rose in the ground??? I have no idea. I am in zone 6B

Margie ...

I plant mine right in the ground.

This is a shot taken during winter when I only had one planted:

or they can be planted in front of the border or with a bed of shorter plants.

This is 'Sequoia Gold'

'Splish Splash'

I like my larger roses, too. I guess when it comes to roses, if a rose sings to me, it's a rose I want to grow.

Smiles,
Lyn

I'm not crazy about minis either, but I do like the ones from Palatine because they're grafted onto R. multiflora and grow a bit larger than the own-root variety. Marriotta is said to be hardy to zone 6, but that's when it's planted in the ground. I think container roses are never as hardy as the ones in the ground.

My personal favorite of these "dahlia" roses is Vintage Visalia because it's a floribunda and it grows larger than the others. Mine's over 3 feet tall, even though it's an own-root rose, and I have no complaints about its resistance. It does better than many other roses in my garden in that respect. It also received an "excellent" rating for disease resistance on HMF.com.

Lyn, what beautiful photographs! As I admire the photo of Pink Poodle, it reminds me of how much I love the 4 seasons. Both Sequoia Gold and Splish Splash are very attractive - I am sure I could squeeze them - hee, hee. Good to know I can plant them directly into the ground - thank goodness! Thanks for taking the time to post your photos.

Zuzu, when I said, " I have never cared for a mini rose" , I meant tended to, take responsibility for. Oops, I should have made that more clear.
Here is where I read about the rose Vintage Visalia (1st paragraph)
http://www.backyardgardener.co...
Then when I scrolled to the bottom, thrips were mentioned. I have been fighting thrips all summer. I read an article the other day that some believe that thrips may be attracted to certain fragrances????
Initially I tried to access HelpMeFind but I could only bring up photos of the rose - no info. I always check HelpMeFind as a source first.
I am glad to hear that you have success with Vintage Visalia.

Backyard Gardener's information is somewhat misleading. The statement about resistance actually applies to roses in general. If you look at the paragraph, you'll see that only the first sentence applies to Vintage Visalia. Incidentally, even that first sentence is misleading. Vintage Visalia is not a "single" rose in any sense. It's not "single" in petal count because it certainly has more than 7 petals, and it's not "single" in terms of inflorescence type because it blooms in clusters.

Here's the information Backyard Gardener offers:

'Vintage Visalia' is a Floribunda rose which produces slightly fragrant, single mid-pink flowers with the a darker shade of pink on the outer petals. In general, roses are a large group of flowering shrubs, most with showy flowers that are single-petalled to fully double petalled. Leaves are typically medium to dark green, glossy, and ovate, with finely toothed edges. Vary in size from 1/2 inch to 6 inches, five petals to more than 30, and in nearly every color. Often the flowers are very fragrant. Most varieties grow on long canes that sometimes climb. Unfortunately, this favorite plant is quite susceptible to a variety of diseases and pests, many of which can be controlled with good cultural practices.

Yes, there's a "Buy from" tab for each entry. Here's the one for Vintage Visalia.

I would urge you to call Burling Leong at Burlington Nursery. The drought has almost forced her out of existence, I believe, but she probably still has some stock left. She's very, very friendly and helpful, especially over the telephone.

Yes I know who she is - very nice lady. I will contact her. Thanks for looking it up for me. Each time i tried to pull up helpmefind site previously, a screen came up stating " your connection is not private". I tried it again just now and it's fine - no problem - very strange. This is wonderful - I found a nice rose and received a free reading lesson - lol

Take a look at Art Nouveau. It has been quite vigorous and very healthy in my Southern California gardens.

Margie ....

Long Ago Roses, which is listed as a vendor is located on the east coast. You might try contacting Linda to see if she has a plant available.
