Wanting to add a Palm to my Tropical area next year. Comprised of:

Hardy Banana
Hardy Kiwi
Cannas
Bird of Paradise
Huge Elephant Ears
Smaller potted Colocasia

Zone 5 B
Plant will be potted and overwintered indoors.

Desired attributes:

Stay relatively small (will do so any way in a pot :-)
Looks like a palm Smiling (Wow - Cool - a Palm tree too!!)
Can handle our weather and full sun

Note that I don't need something hardy on the cold side like a Windfall palm, since I don't plan to leave it out. Might a Majesty work? I can get one locally on clearance for $6 for a nice looking plant ~ 30 " tall. But methinks it will get TOO big. Smiling Guess I could bonsai it, heh.

Suggestions? Any others growing in my or close to my zone?

Don't think you'd have much success trying to bonsai a palm, David. They are monocots too.

Pygmy Date palm is a good one that will grow slowly, stay small, and they are beautiful. Sometimes they will put up multiple trunks too. Here's the database entry for it Pygmy Date Palm (Phoenix roebelenii)

Scroll down to the bottom, where there are lots of pictures of them. I have a few pictures there of the gorgeous dark red fruit, the clump and a new trunk coming up from the base of mine. They are at the end of my driveway in full Florida sun, and do great. They're also relatively cold tolerant, so you could leave them out later in the fall than some of the tender ones.

The only 'down' side to it is the thorns. They are very prickly! But I just wear leather gloves when I trim off the dead fronds and it's fine. The trunk is not prickly, just the inner parts of the fronds. (there's a picture in the database of the long sharp thorns, too)

@dyzzypyxxy - TY for all the info. Regarding Palm bonsai, I was kidding and should have put a smiley there.

We also saw a really pretty palm on a trip to the Caymans. It's an Areca vestiaria. Arecas are a very common clumping container or landscape palm here, but this one has the most stunning red stems! I don't know where you could get one but if you find it let me know?

These were in planters in an outdoor mall.

My parlor palm spent its' first dozen or so years in the conditions you described, in OH, also Z5. Had for over 20 yrs by now. They are easy to find, and have been referred to by this common name since the Victorian era, where they were able to survive in the very low light and dry, fireplace-heated air in the parlor.

Parlor Palm (Chamaedorea elegans)

When you buy the pots of babies, there's almost always waaaaay too many of them waaaaay to close together. (Not planted, they sprout from seeds.) They're not usually hard to separate, into individual pots, or to just put a few inches between trunks, and kept as a pot of multiple individuals. If left mushed against each other, there's not enough air circulation, and you won't be able to inspect for pests or remove leaf stumps where they can hide.
The golden rule: Do to others only that which you would have done to you.

It's not a palm, but "Ponytail Palm" is cool. Actually a caudiciform, it will grow only according to its container. Planted in the ground, it will get enormous.

Sago palms are actually not palms, they are cycads. But you're right, they make pretty good container plants, and grow pretty slowly so they don't get out of hand for years, probably.

Like the Pygmy date palms, they are also very thorny, though.

I decided to get both a Windmill and a Majesty.

If I decide on more nodding will get a Sago and Parlor.

Thanks for all the input.

How about Trachycarpus wagnerianus. A very nice fan palm, cold hardy and a more dwarf variant of the regular trachycarpus variants. It has much stiffer leaves and is very wind tolerant.

I purchased this ponytail palm from a small nursery last Friday.
Thumb of 2015-11-03/Rainbow/579d39

I went back to the nursery a few days later to look around some more and saw this huge ponytail palm. The caudex looks to be nearly 2.5 feet in diameter and the trunk about 15 feet tall. The roots have probably grown out the bottom of the pot and into the ground.

My palm-like suggestions, but do bring them in when it gets too cold in your area and don't water till temps warm up nicely Smiling Very drought tolerant. They handle 100F easily.

Ponytail palm - Beaucarnea recurvata: I can leave this outdoors, but to be cautious when we have winter rain forecasts for several days and/or with hard freeze, I just play safe and keep it indoors during winter. Plus we get very strong winds at times, so have to shelter it.

Cardboard palm - Zamiaculcas furfuracea - In my area, I leave this outdoors year round. Leaves quite cardboard-like stiff texture when mature, new growth looks furry and feels soft.

Sago palm - Cycad - I leave this outdoors as well year round, rain or shine. I positioned this plant in the corner side of our garden, those leaf tips are quite sharp and pointy. But I love them when in new growth, so soft!

By the way, I think I saw a Cardboard palm framing the front door of a feed store owned by Filipinos. It had cracked-in-half eggshells on top of the soil. I wonder why it was not incorporated into the soil...do you know?

Thanks KD! I was really mean to my cycad for awhile, cannot find a good spot where it will get more sun, kept moving it around, so I settled on that corner, at least I will not suffer those pointy leaf ends Hilarious!

Oh you will love Cardboard palm, when I first met that plant years ago, I thought it was an artificial plant Hilarious! Hilarious! I also saw it growing in the Philippines planted in ground, surprised to see it there, knowing it likes to be on the drier side, so it can survive nicely in your area too.

My Adeniums are going to hide indoors soon, getting chilly overnights now! Lucky you to have blooms still! nodding

KD, I also wonder why they do that, I also saw that when they grow Sanseveira in the Philippines, like they will put the half eggshell right at the tip of the leaves. Blinking Shrug! I want to think it is for calcium needs..but I do not think that is the reason though for them..I think they just find it decorative Big Grin But I will try to ask again some friends over there..hopefully someone knows!

Crushed eggshells deter slugs. Could that have been an issue?
