Has anyone grown cipollini onions? Have never grown onion from seed just from sets. We are in the desert with many warm days still ahead. Just wondering if I could plant seed now. Thanks for any insight.

I have not tried to grow Cippollini onions. It is a long day onion which means it need long daylight hours to bulb. I would think that you would plant seed in January or February. You coul probably plant them now, but you would gain much as they want begin bulbing until June. Onions are asy to start from seed so you should have no problems on that score. In your zone and you like onions , you might want also try short day onions planted now, bulb up in March, harvest in May. http://blog.oregonlive.com/hom...

Hi Dillard,
Thank you for the help. Great link too. The Desert Sunrise looks good! Is that one grown by you? We are about 33N latitude here, so the desert sunrise would be a great choice. Maybe seed from Johnny's or Territorial Seed?
Thank You!

Yes I happen to like red onions. I grow Desert Sunrise and Pinot Rouge both varieties developed by Duane Palmer seeds in Yuma Arizona. I have grown several other of his varieties and they perform well here in Georgia. http://www.dpseeds.com/onions_....
