I have never planted bulbs in a container to overwinter.
Can I just leave the container with planted bulbs outside or do I have to protect them somehow?
Or could I leave them in a unheated garage?
I was thinking of planting some daffodils for the front steps next spring.

Regards Brian

They should not freeze.
I would bury the containers.
And mulch them over.

I plant them and put 2" of mulch on top of the soil and they are on the patio. I plant Spring Bulbs, Asiatic lilies and , Oriental Lilies in the pots too.

I do have very large pots though, I do not know how big your pots are which might make a difference. My pots are 4' tall and 4-5' wide.

I would think that you could do it Brian, if you do as Cinta does. Maybe you could wrap some insulation around the container, with lots of mulch on top?

@BrianNoel

In Zone 5 B unless you have HUGE containers as pointed out above heavily mulched, simply outdoors they will likely rot. Particularly if placed on a deck or patio. Freeze - thaw - moisture - freeze - thaw repeat. Been there - done that in smaller containers and regular Deck Planters that go over rails. ROT

If you plant and then leave in garage you might be ok. Or if you sink a pot and mulch in a shaded area, you may be okay.

You might experiment a bit. Smiling
