Now that daylily season is over, I'm looking to add some Amaryllis to my small-but-rapidly-growing amaryllis collection (which is currently a bunch of NOIDs) to get me through the endless winter months of Michigan. Here is the list of names of amaryllis that I'm interested in (picture list below):

I'm holding out to see what sorts of things are being offered in the October NARR, but if I am not able to snag a few of these through a NARR contributor, I'd love to know who you guys know of that has LARGE selections of amaryllis bulbs (i.e. a number of the ones on my wishlist) or who would be willing to trade bulbs for some seeds or other plants I may have for trade. I'm still putting together my items-for-trade list, but I hope to have it completed by the end of October. If anyone can point me in the right amaryllis direction or has several of these for trade, please let me know!

So far, the best resource I've found [other than knocking on Barbara (BSharf) and Sue (Calif_Sue)'s doors ] is High Country Gardens: http://www.highcountrygardens..... They were a contributor to last October's NARR (and I hope they are again this year, too).

You have a very eclectic wish list. Most of those can be located at online nurseries but lets face it, they are expensive. I don't trade Amaryllis myself since I don't want to risk passing on any possible health issues in my bulbs
to someone else. I would be interested to learn if you have any success locating any of these bulbs in trade.

If you ever change your mind, please let me know. I see that you have quite a few of these, although I really don't know that I have anything you'd be interested in trading for.

So far, I've been keeping my bulbs in pots. I separated my giant pot 'o bulbs early this year and they spent the warmer months outside. I'll be bringing them in, but is there really much concern about the transference of disease or other health issues if they are potted separately? If so, should I be concerned about what I get from online nurseries? It sounds like I have a bunch of research to do on amaryllis; hopefully I can find some time to do so soon! I'd really love to have some in the next couple of months so they can begin blooming indoors this winter.

The major issue is plant viruses: hippeastrum mosaic virus, cucumber mosaic virus, tomato spotted wilt virus and tobacco mosaic virus which are transmitted by sucking insects. There's no cure for these infections which weaken and eventually kill the plant. Amaryllis are also affected by various bacterial and fungal diseases which can be be fatal if not treated aggressively. Mine are all planted outside so they do show disease and insect damage. I would never send one of my bulbs to another gardener, since I wouldn't want to unintentionally pass on a problem. Keeping them in pots helps in terms of good cultural practice but if they are outside during the summer, they can still be exposed to issues. You assume that you are getting healthy, virus free, bulbs from commercial nurseries, but buyer beware. Very rarely, a sick bulb can slip through and the nurseries want to be notified so they can check their stock. Unfortunately, it could be several weeks before you realize that there is a serious problem. During this time, the sick bulb has been in close proximity to other bulbs. This is situation where a quarantine space would be a good idea for new acquisitions. I think I am going to start following my own advice.

I'll try to quarantine new plants, although I have plants spread throughout my house, so I'm going to have to figure out how much space is necessary for quarantine.

for opening this forum. This is my amaryllis plant, that I have for about 4-5 years. All same specie (??) , last picture you can see the small bulbs near the main one, I have no idea how to separate them.

@sangel - welcome!

I wish I could help you, but your roots/bulbs look different than the roots/bulbs that I separated years ago when I had a giant outdoor tub of amaryllis that needed separated out. Yours are also a bit more intertwined than mine were, so I'd be afraid to give you bad advice that would break your plants. Perhaps @bsharf could help?

Sangel welcome to the forum. Try soaking the root ball in water for several hours and then rinse off as much dirt as you can, in order to better see the roots. The roots need to be carefully separated, perhaps a eating fork or a thin screwdriver would help get in between the tangled roots. No matter how careful you are, there will be some wounds to the roots and you may even have to take a knife and slice into the root mass, sacrificing some of the smaller bulblets. Dip the roots in ground cinnamon, which is a natural antiseptic and plant the bulbs at the same depth as the mother bulb. You can plant quite a lot of bulbs in the pot. They like to be crowded. Best of luck, those are very nice amaryllis plants.

@DogsNDaylilies - did you ever get hold of a Papilio? I have to check mine, I might have some bulets. Are you limiting yourself to just what is on your list?

@cwhitt - thanks for asking!... Actually, I did end up receiving Papillio as a gift a couple of years ago. I love it, but it hasn't bloomed again since that first year, unfortunately.

I'm not limiting myself to what is in that list, exactly, but those are my favorites that I have found so far. I like reds, doubles, and amaryllis with unique looks. (I'm not really into pinks, generally speaking.)

Yes, I think I have them all listed. My two favorites are Naranja, because of the glittery sparkle on the leaves, and Lady Jane - I do not think I have any bulblets of either of those though. But I can keep you in mind if there is anything of mine you like.

Sorry, I meant glitter sparkle on the petals, not leaves.

Christie - that Naranja is pretty!! I wasn't necessarily looking to expand into oranges, but that one might inspire me. I do love bright orange flowers...

@bsharf thank you. I cannot do it now, plant is back the pot, I forced to do it in winter, when my pot broke down due to the wind. I was able to split a mature bulb from this mess, lost about half of the white roots, and put each one into a new pot. For this mess , pot is temporary, there almost no free space there, this winter I will have to remove it and transfer to a bigger pot, I will try to make a splice then. (it is impossible to do it at summer, when temperature is at least 90-92 F in the middle of a day). It will surely grow more this summer, amaryllis love a lot of heat (as long as it have plenty of water) and grow like crazy. P.S. Since picture were take, flower itself died, there are only green leaves now,
