Daylily (Hemerocallis 'Blue Beetle')

I can't believe I have this one in my garden! It is the daylily that got me addicted to daylilies! A very generous friend here sent me a fan in Sept. 2013, and I'm in love with it.

It has bloomed very well for me, and I love the different look it can have on any given day. In the morning, it can be one color, and by evening, a different color, but it never looks like it has suffered from being in the full sun. I had instant rebloom this year too, which was great! I was sent one fan, which divided into two fans last year, and each of those fans had instant rebloom this year. Having four scapes on two fans was wonderful! It sits nicely above the foliage, and the foliage always looks great for me. I love it!

I've had BLUE BEETLE since the fall of 2010 I believe. It was the first expensive daylily that I ever purchased and I was super paranoid about how it would do over the winter. Since then it has reliably bloomed, occasionally rebloomed, and puts up at least a new fan every year. This year I did not get rebloom as we had a pretty dry summer and I was dealing with sprinkler problems so it went dormant about August 1st. It did bloom on 5 scapes though. I bought the plant mostly because I love the look of it as a double, and it has never doubled for me. I will sometimes get extra petaloid tissue but never anything close to a full double. Luckily it is absolutely gorgeous as a single. The edge in particular if you can get close to the bloom, the colors can be phenomenal.

It is reliably pod fertile though it does seem to rarely produce viable pollen for me. I have some frozen, and it is fertile, but I would say there is useable pollen on maybe 20% of the blooms. Not a particularly rust resistant variety from what I have seen but it is extremely hardy having easily survived temps in the range of -10 - -20˚F with little snow cover and no mulch. It is only listed as the parent of one plant - Gossards 2013 intro BABY'S GOT BLUE EYES - which I have but has yet to bloom!

All told, I adore BLUE BEETLE and despite having spent more on a single fan that I had on any entire order of plants up to that point, I could not be happier with it.

Mine has never doubled either, and I think it was the photos of the double that had me drooling badly! But, just like James said, the single blooms are absolutely gorgeous, and well worth having, even if it never doubles.

This one sat here for the first two years it was here and then ( thankfully, as I follow the 3 year rule!) it JUMPED to attention this past summer and went from two small fans to six large fans now. I'd worried over its vigor in 2013 and 2014, as it didn't seem as vigorous as others of Jamie's that grow here. Apparently this one just needs time to become established. It has never bloomed double here but I'm happy that next year it will be at clump strength. The color here never has shown the extreme variation seen in images shown in the lead post - it is fairly consistent.
