The combines are starting to go great guns. The dust from the soybean chaff going through the combine makes it look like the dust bowl sometimes. I haven't asked DS how they're running; he runs a combine for the neighbor. The SU gets called into action too; today he was running a grain cart and filling the semis when they came to the field.

I like the smell in the air after the combine has gone through the corn; it's just so "fresh" and earthy.

I heard rumblings of rain tomorrow; we don't need it now to slow down harvest. Days have been really nice, and the nights about 50. No frost in the forecast yet, but I'm sure it's coming before any of us are ready. I've started brutally pruning stuff before i take it to the g'house. I think if I didn't take bathroom or lunch breaks, I could get it all hauled in with the loader tractor in 2 days. That's if I had everything pruned. I'll need to dig up my 9 brugs I have planted in the ground. I know THAT will be like digging graves, they got pretty big. I'll put the photo here so you can see.

Harvest here is done except the hay which will be cut again in many meadows. There are huge round bales sitting in many fields waiting to be moved to their winter storage spots. I've never seen a growing season like this has been. The spring rains gave everything a big headstart and, except for the "flash drought" of July, we have had a little rain often all summer. The cotton farmers are plowing under the shredded stubble and most fields look bleak and bare. The corn and sorghum are long gone. For some reason no one seems to plant winter cover crops around here. Our cows and horses, and pigs are fatter than they should be - on grass alone in most cases, and the chickens are laying as many eggs as we can sell! It has been a good year.

Tomorrow is the last day of October. The neighbor has a couple hours left and he will be done. They would have finished tonight except the trucks got shut off. And it looks like massive amounts of rain coming this way. Unless the hand of providence moves it east or west a whole bunch, I don't think we'll dodge it. At least they have all the bad, hilly fields done now.

It's been getting chillier, but I guess since it IS 24 hours from November, it's to be expected, but nowhere does it say I have to LIKE it. Angry

They keep telling us we are going to have huge rainstorms here, but so far it has all gone north of us into the "dry" part of Texas. This weather pattern seems to be becoming the new norm. As I have some fence posts to replace, I wouldn't mind a bit more rain to soften up the ground. It is cooler here too but not at all cold - and it can stay that way!
