I have a prayer plant I just bought recently from a local chain store and it appears to have a branch that might be good for propagating since, for the time being, I'd rather have a bushy prayer plant than a hanging plant. Here is a picture :

(The branch I'm referring to is visible in the picture; it's on the right side and has 5 leaves with a healthy shoot forming to make more.)

How do you recommend I propagate it? I tried propagating a leaf from the same plant (it broke off in the car) and it's not looking good, so I don't want to mess up propagating an entire branch. Here's a picture of the leaf (suggestions welcome):

Now for the teddy bear plant. ..

I LOVE plants with fuzzy leaves, so I was smitten when I saw (and felt) this teddy bear vine near the prayer plant. They only had one, so I bought it and want to take a shot at propagating it, but I have no idea how. Should a leaf cutting work? Do I need to sacrifice a whole branch? Will a small, 8-leaf cutting work? If so, there's a piece I want to cut off anyway that I think might work. It's at the bottom left of this picture:

Please let me know if you have successfully propagated either of these and what your recommendations are.

For the Maranta leucoreura it's better to wait until Spring. Make a plastic "tent" to keep humidity levels up; keep planting medium fairly moist and give the plant some sun.

I've never had the Cyanotis beddomei; hopefully someone else will come along with an answer for that one.

This link has tons of good information about propagation:

My old stand-by is usually the Forsyth Pot method; works well for most things.

Thank You! , Greene!

My maranta is in indirect light because my house doesn't get much direct light, unfortunately. Glare I read prayer plants are good for low light areas, so it is in a corner that gets low- to medium-level indirect light, depending on time of day.

...but it is currently sitting under a natural-light lamp that I turn on some days to supplement the natural light, so maybe that will help?

Both propagate with stem cuttings. Prayer Plant - Cut off that stem as close to the soil as you can and stick it in some dirt just past the knobby bit so it's underneath the soil. That's where the new roots will form. Teddy Bear - Root it the same way you'd root Tradescantia fluminensis. Cut off a long stem and divide it into pieces with at least 2, preferably 3 leaf nodes. Bury the stems covering at least 1 leaf node. Keep the soil moist and the cuttings in bright but not direct light. Prayer Plant should start pushing out roots in about a couple of weeks - soil temperature will determine the swiftness. The Teddy Bear within a day or 2.

That link really does have a lot of great information! I love the chart about what propagation methods work for various plants--that is a wealth of information all in one, simply chart.

I'll try to wait until Spring to do any of my prayer plant propagating. I might want to do it before then, though, so that I remember all of this great information!....but I'll try to remember all of the information and resist the wintertime urge to have more plants or create cuttings to feed the desire. If I do propagate the prayer plant before then, I'll just have to remember that there's a higher likelihood of losing the cutting and I'll have to accept that.

I've been calling the Cyanotis by an illegitimate name, C. kewensis. How risquรฉ!

Tiffany, don't feel bad, I was fooled, too! And so was the Exotic Angel Plants company. The plant tag says Cyanotis kewensis

Thank you for correcting us. I assume that http://www.theplantlist.org/ is a reputable and reliable source? Judging from the fact that it's a .org and appears to have a lot of great links and a professional appearance, it appears to be. If so, I'm going to bookmark it for future reference. Beyond All Things Plants, there aren't very many places/experts I know of to confirm information such as scientific plant names, so it's nice to have another reliable reference point.

It's one of them. I haven't investigated C. kewensis to find out why TPL says it's illegitimate... or if the info there agrees with other name repositories. I only "got involved" because I checked to see if beddomei is a synonym of kewensis (the opposite is said to be true on TPL,) and if not, to try to find pics to see if it's something that should be on my wish list, even more specifically than being under the umbrella of "if it's a Commelinaceae I haven't bagged yet, I need it."

I just found this again--thanks again for posting it! -- and I'm going to try a couple more cuttings to see how they do. My teddy bear plant is very fickle. Some of the tendrils are doing great while others are turning brown and dying. The tricky part is that it browns from the base instead of the tips, so I don't know it's struggling until it's too late. That happened to a number of the tendrils this past winter, so I took the healthy tips and tried to plant them, but I'm 0:5. I probably did a lot of things wrong with the first 5, though:
1) I cut it right where the bad, brown/withering part met the good (I probably should have cut higher to ensure the cells and veins really were healthy where I cut)
2) I might not have planted them as deeply as you suggested...I had forgotten about your instructions to bury a leaf node
3) I planted a couple of them in containers I didn't sanitize (which previously held small orchids) as a quick fix because it was winter and I didn't have my pots prepared yet.
4) my hand was forced to do those in winter, a less optimal time period

I think I was just hoping that if they were as vigorous as their cousin (the purple inch plant/wandering jew), none of that would matter.

With spring here, I'm hoping to have more success.

@Purpleinopp - I just planted two new cuttings and I'm hoping they take so I can send you one or both this spring or summer. Keep your fingers crossed. I put them in a seed starting mix as part of a kit and I buried the stems pay a leaf node just as Xeramtheum instructed, so with a little luck, care, and patience, I hope they will thrive.
