Toxins in biosolids, beware of "millorganite" in purchased bags of compost.

Either make your own compost,
or get it from small suppliers who you get to know and trust.
Or good old fashion well rotted manure?

Thanks for posting that warning. I'm not a fan of Milorganite based on what people throw into sewer systems.

I dont know why there is not some kind of oversight for environmental toxins. Even our food supply is getting saturated. We are forced to grow our own, if we expect to minimize the toxins we are being bombarded with.

I agree I thought that's what the EPA was for.
The older I get, the more suspicious I get of the whole government/agribusiness relationship.

EPA, CDC, FDA, none of them seem to be doing their job. The toxins just keep piling up. I didn't realize that was an artifact of getting older!! I keep thinking haven't I seen this campaign before--back in the 1950s?

I am concerned that the US might just become one big toxic dump with no clean drinking water (except what you buy in the store), non-gmo food crops ruined by cross-pollination and an increase in earthquakes and climate change. And the majority of folks don't care enough until it becomes catastrophic.

Smiling DH says I'm getting paranoid with age. I drink filtered water and try to keep indoor plants supplied with rain water in the winter (who knows what's in that these days).

I know this topic is labeled regarding "compost". But if I read the article correctly, if you buy potted plants, or potting soils, you are also likely to be purchasing toxins. ??

After reading the article, it made me question "organic". I mean how many products really labeled organic are organic? A lady selling potted plants (mostly herbs, but some tomatoes and pepper plants) at a farmer's market had big indications of being "organic". I asked her, "what about your pottting mix"? Oh, she said "I buy the organic kind", and sure enough, there are several kinds labeled "organic". Well, after reading that article, I doubt that it's really organic.

It is very sad what the workings of "greed" will do; to the earth and to people. Sad

I guess it depends on your definition of organic. 'Course, some manufacturers would chose the definition that affects the bottom line in a positive way.

A passion for organic vegetable gar
I have taken several courses on "organic' gardening. I don't buy the hype of organic versus GMO. GMO is by itself not totally a horrible thing. Chemicals, on the other hand, are of big concern for me. I do adhere to many of the guidelines of various organizations that are considered organic movement leaders. If I am buying an outside input for my garden, I look for the OMRI seal on it. OMRI stands for Organic Materials Review Institute and they test various products for adherence to organic standards. They do produce a list which is helpful.
But, I do not generally buy anything to use in my garden. But, I do have two weapons I use. One, I have a very strong soil which assists the various plants with their own defense. Secondly, I save rainwater and I make my own compost. If you are having to use insecticides or dusts to deter pests in your edible garden, you need to look at your soil first and begin to make your own soil amendments. It wasn't easy for me but I follow a regimented regime when it comes to my edibles and it pays off every year.
Was I always this self sustaining? Nope. But I did the research, took courses where time allowed and have followed the routines which allow me to outproduce my neighbors similarly sized gardens. I hope this isn't coming off as bragging as it's just based on facts and results. I was just asked to help with a community garden which has had no real success in two years time. I will be giving classes through out the summer in hopes that some of the discouraged farmers will see success and will continue. Gardening is certainly worth it.
I don't pretend to have all the answers. But, if you have any questions, reply to me and I will be more than glad to assist you in your endeavor.

Definitely agree in looking for the OMRI seal. I try not to bring in purchased compost or mulches.

grdnguru. If you are unaware of the problems with GMOs there is a brief summary here: http://articles.mercola.com/si...

Monsanto GMO crops are also linked to more than 18,000 farmer suicides in India (as of 2014)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/...

My dog, Roscoe, is now riddled with tumors from a diet of Purina dog chow -- main ingredient: GMO corn.
