Looks like a species of Aster. I would be hesitant to guess since there are at least 25 species recorded in Tennessee.

Reminds me of Heath Aster (Symphyotrichum ericoides) It shows it to grow to three feet but I've seen it here at about four feet tall and wide.

I agree heath aster
It has taken over half an acre if my front pasture and is taller than the big goat , 4 foot maybe more.
I had intended to cut it down when It had just started to bloom and noticed all the insects (hundreds) so I let it be .

It can be kept short for the garden , I have seen it flowering in lawn that have been mowed.
..a balanced life is worth pursuit.
