I am trying to grow succulents from seeds that I ordered. They are doing good but my question is they are tall and spindley . They are a small fuzzy flower on the top of the plant. Is the bloom what you plant to have succuents/?/

Are they Sempervivums? (Hens & Chicks)
How old are the plants?
A picture would be *very* helpful.
From what you say, it sounds like they are blooming which is normal for succulents.

Tim made some great comments. It would be very helpful to see photos of your seedlings and what appears to be blooms. It would also be helpful to know what growing zone you are in.

Most succulents don't do well indoors for extended periods of time, and by your description it sounds like they are etiolated (stretching up to find light).
No, the bloom is not what you plant to have succulents. Eventually the blooms will mature and form seed, if they get pollinated. The seed is what you would plant for more succulents.

I just started my first test batch of seeds indoors in a mini green house, just to see what happens - all seeds are of noid origin: 1 self cross, 6 crosses with only one parent known and 1random mix - all collected from my own plants. I will take a foto in the next days...I'm curious to see what happens !!!

What kind of winters do you have Michael?
We will all watch to see how they do starting them this time of year indoors.
It seems to me that MR @MotherRaphaela started some indoors and had good results.

Sounds encouraging! Last winter was rather mild - More wet than snowy, temperatures mostly around -2°C ( about 28°F) in daytime too minimum -10°C (about 14°F) at nighttime. Actually in early spring we had some days that were significantly colder

Okay, you do get a winter. Good to know. Your soon to be seedlings will be ready to enter the great outdoors next spring.

I found the first two seedlings this morning (after only 5 days). Small like sand grains, barely visible and too small for my camera. I found the whole soil surface covered by a fine web like type of mold - is this something to worry about? Will the mold overgrow my seedlings? For my cactus seed I always used sterilized soil and watered with lowly concentrated Chinisol solution to keep away funghi and mold. But I read that semps are having a symbiosis with some soil funghi and one should not kill those by sterilizing the soil or using funghizids. Anybody able to share his experience on this topic?

@springcolor Julia, didn't you have something that you used for this kind of thing?

I always pour boiling water through my seed starting soil before planting. also water with weak chamomile tea to stop dampening off, sprinkle of cinnamon works too. Maybe try to keep the seedlings a bit dryer. I Use this to keep moisture in when starting seeds




Winter sowing in milk jugs keeps them moist too.

Now ist's too late for boiling water. The humidity dome I am using has small sindows on top which I keep open for good aeration. Soil is moist, but not wet - there is much less condensate on the dome than in your photo. I was planning to slightly mist the soil with a handsprayer this weekend. Would chamomile tea help against the surface mold or would the cinnamon do? (In fact the reason for that mold seem to be the flower remnants in my seed mix... ) or will the seedlings grow on/in the mold without being harmed and there is nothing to worry about?

If it is that green mold nothing you can do about that, seedlings will get big enough and it will be time to pot them into 4-inch containers or in the ground come spring. . Just sprinkle a bit of cinnamon over that top, will not hurt anything.

Our @Valleylynn wrote this and @jungleshadows uses this method as well. I think he plants February in Oregon. If you plant any more seeds you might try. Lots less work and worry.
